That gives us two real scoring lines then.
Then you can use Bennett-Backlund-Frolik as your match up / defensive line and don’t have to worry about their offensive dry spells as much.
|
Why don't we just move Lindholm to #2C, Backlund to #3C, Jankowksi to #1RW, and keep all our picks?

I think you are missing the point, which is that there is not some obvious magic number for this particular group to meet their full potential—at least, not yet. Like I said, there is more than just one way to do this.

So to do it the way you're suggesting the flames need the greatest goal scorer in league history or the best player in the league on an illegal back diving contract with a second line center who is nearly as elite.
Tough road to hoe.

I don't know that, and neither does anyone else.
Like I said: there are multiple ways to go about doing this: moving Gaudreau is one, re-signing him is another. One option is not necessarily more right or wrong than the other while we are still three years out from having to make this decision.
To put it another way, take a look at then Flames roster in Gaudreau's first year on his RFA deal. Compare that to today. How will the roster look in three years? Without knowing, whose to say that Gaudreau needs to be replaced before then?

Jankowski and kylington would be a paltry cost to pay for schein and we should run away laughing if it comes to pass. Both are good but schein was almost ppg last season. Tkachuk-schenn-bennett/neal would be epic second lines.

Yup. Paul Gaustad was once traded for a 1st at a deadline. Dominic Moore for a 2nd IIRC.

We should trade Monahan for him and then put O'Reilly on waivers

Do you think that was fair value? I mean, Toronto traded a pick for Tom Kurvers. That sure worked out well.
I don't think repeating other teams' mistakes is necessarily the way to go.

We would have to do a bit of a cap dump to make a trade here, unless a pure rental at the deadline. If St. Louis truly tear it down and trade several of their top paid players they'll need some vets to fill out their roster and reach salary floor for a couple years. Perhaps they would be willing to take either Ryan, Stone or (gasp) Neal as part of a trade that got them good young players and/or picks.

Oooo. Blues have some things I wouldn't mind the Flames taking a look at.
Jake Allen
Jordan Binnington
Oskar Sundqvist
Ivan Barbashev
Robert Thomas
Klim Kostin
Any one of those would be sweet. Allen needs a change of scenery. Binnington I think has some really high potential.

Flames were in on Maroon this past summer and covet that type of player. Just saying.

And would be extremely cheap.
He was traded for a 3rd and a B/C prospect last deadline. The way he is currently playing should net less than that this year

If Flames fans are frustrated with Mike Smith's inconsistency, wait till they get a load of Jake Allen.
