Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2020 - Round 1
It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.
First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results
Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.
I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.
We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.

Valimaki, IMO, should have an easy win this round. If he hadn't missed last year due to injury, he would have graduated from the prospect designation. Hopefully his injury has not had a massive impact on his high end potential.

Didn't realize Valimaki was an option so I picked Zary, but this is a pretty easy answer.

Easily Valimaki.
What he’s doing in Liiga right now is only going to make Flames fans giddy at the fact that after all he’s been through this past year, he hasn’t skipped a beat and is still the heir to Gio’s throne.

Valimaki is a good choice. But I went with Pelletier just because I like to be cool and different.
But for real, any time I have seen him play I am impressed by the way he goes about his game. He is hard on the puck forechecking and backchecking, has a keen eye for passing lanes, and never does a fly by, it is hard starts and stops everywhere he goes.
These are habits I love to see, and combined with a scoring touch it makes for a complete forward who slots in well up and down the line up. The guy is already playing hockey like an NHLer.

I didn't even look for Valimaki, consider him a full timer at this point.

I could see a possible argument for Zary or Pelletier, but Valimaki just looks too much like a stud d-man so far. Gotta be him at #1.
Edit: woah...people are voting for a goalie as #1? A goalie that's average to below average height and taken in the 7th round? Over ALL of our other prospects??? The mind reels.
Seriously, state your case. I cannot fathom that vote. I want to know reasons now.

Thanks for the heads up on Valimaki. I assumed he had graduated.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

This is how I see the different tiers of Flames prospects
1 Impact NHLers
- Valimaki, Zary and Pelletier
2. A good chance at graduating to the NHL one day
- Emilio Pettersen, Phillips , Mackey, Yelesin , Gawdin, Zavgorodniy
3. Guys with the right upside, but still a long shot for various reasons
- Ruzicka, Tuulola, Kuznetsov, Poirier, Boltmann, Nikolaev, Pospisil
There is an argument to be made for bumping Emilio Pettersen up a tier, but the top three should be pretty clear cut. Things look like they will completely fall off a cliff around the 15th 16th position.

I predict that Valimaki will be considered our #1 dman going into the 21-22 season.

I didn't vote for Wolf but I could see why people would, he probably has the highest ceiling of all the prospects. Scott Wheeler at the Athletic had him as the 5th best goalie prospect league wide.

I have Wolf sixth on my personal list.
Valimaki will certainly be first, and he's first on my list, too. I think he's going to be tremendous.
#2 is where it gets interesting.

JV. I don’t necessarily see the Heiskanen in him, but he’s a mature, composed player and I’m looking forward to what he brings.
He’s just missed so much time.

Mackey is the biggest question mark for me. Quite a few reviews give him a real shot.
ETA: and you never know about a guy like Parsons.
