Default Are You Playing Rec Hockey This Year?

Our leagues have put in place protocols such as arriving 15 minutes prior to ice times, temperature screening, masks in the room etc.

To be honest I am on the fence here. I started playing two weeks ago and now I see the CDC has concluded that recreational hockey is a very risky activity that could result in widespread transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

Thoughts?

This thread has some discussion around this:

https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...=179094&page=3

these are the rules we have to follow:

Updated Summary of COVID Rules for WHCA:
Masks to be worn in hallways, dressing rooms
No spectators permitted
No showers permitted (fines will be issued if we use showers)
Come dressed and ready to play (as much as possible) – no changing in hallways
Maximum participants is 28 (including goalies)
Maintain proper social distancing
No sharing water bottles
No spitting!
Leave all valuables at home
Enter main doors 15 minutes before start time – no waiting in the hallway
A person will be designated to wipe down high touch bench surfaces with wipes provided
Must leave arena within 20 minutes of game end
No access to other areas of WHCA
The Barn pub is closed
I have to keep a list of all players in attendance in case contact tracing is required – there will be a sign-in sheet for each dressing room (maybe one person in each room can record the players)
Conduct a COVID-19 self-test before attending – stay home if you have any symptoms, or have been exposed to anyone with symptoms or has travelled in the past 14 days
Sanitize hands

i was hoping to put my team in again this past september, but couldn't get enough guys to play. this would have been our 11th season, but it didn't happen.

this is what it looks in kelowna....
the 'normal' season (sept-may) has been split in half. so now there are 2 half season: sept-dec, jan -may.
while in the building you need to wear a mask (no biggie)
outside doors are locked until 15 minutes before game time.
get into building, sign in and get to your change room. i have no clue how i'd be able to get into my goalie gear in what would likely be 10 only minutes.
teams are limited to only 10 skaters and 1 goalie
all showers, sinks, toilets are blocked off in the change rooms
during the game, if you spit (on the ice or bench area) you get a warning. do it again and you get thrown out of the game
after the game you have to be out of the change room in 15 minutes.

the biggest kickers for my guys were these 3 things...
#1 - cost - last season for each guy it was around $20/game. this season it would have been $28/game
#2 - lack of 'community' - let's be honest... most of us play hockey becuz not only do we love the game but we enjoy the time "with the boys". that's a HUUUGE draw for me. i love the guys on my team - many of us have been friends for years and hockey is a great excuse to hang out with each other.
#3 - playoffs over christmas. becuz they split the season in half they now have playoffs starting in mid december. i can say from having a team for 10 years that december is BRUTAL to try and get guys out. why they didn't wait to do playoffs in january is a huge "whaaaaa?" to me.

i'm not sure what the covid count is like right now in calgary. i believe kelowna is currently around 30... maybe a little under - so it's not going crazy here (thankfully). becuz our numbers are quite low i'd feel fairly comfortable going out to play, however, if it's starts to climb i'd be a lot more hesitant.

Not sure what exactly you are afraid of unless you are over 80?

Quite a few leagues in Lethbridge cancelled. I run a weekly game of pickup hockey and the procedures I had to comply with in order for them to book my ice time was too much work for me. So my group isn't playing this year. I understand quite a few teams/leagues aren't happening this year in Lethbridge.

Our league ran a fall mini league that no one seemed interested in. Apparently the "regular" winter season will be starting November 15th, however the league has given us no information regarding cost. I don't see many people signing up this year due to money. Honestly I haven't been on the ice since March and I really don't miss it. I'm enjoying having quiet nights at home.

I'm a wee bit afraid of catching it and giving it to someone who's over 80?

We don't know the long term effects - respiratory and brain damage has happened in some patients.

Young people have died.

People with Diabetes / Asthma or other concerns are at higher risk.

You seem blatantly uninformed.

While I am not "afraid", these are my personal concerns, in approximate order of concern:

1) Contracting it and bringing it home to my 2 year-old daughters, who then have short or long-term effects, whether or not I am sick or physically affected.

2) Contracting it and passing it along to my wife, who becomes seriously ill or worse, whether or not I am sick or physically affected.

3) Contracting it and passing it along to my 75 year-old parents, who are obviously higher risk, whether or not I am sick or physically affected.

4) Contracting it and becoming seriously ill/hospitalised or dying.

5) Contracting it and either my wife or I get sick enough to be useless at home for upwards of 1-2 weeks (or more), rendering the other 100% responsible for all home care.

6) Contracting it and having long-term effects, the serious and significance of which are currently unknown.

7) Contracting it and passing it along to anyone else, whether or not I am sick or physically affected.

The order of the last three are debatable.

Awesome analogy. Makes zero sense comparably, but keep up the good work. Make sure you don't forget your masks and gloves when you are driving by yourself in the car.

Exactly!

Like with everyone telling us not to try heroine. "You'll get addicted and won't be able to stop". News flash, I don't WANT to stop! Life is short, why not enjoy it? I could get hit by a car tomorrow.

So by me saying there is nothing to be afraid of you try and slander me because I question your own irrational fear?

No wonder most threads in CP deteriorate into basement dwellers making stupid suggestions for Treliving to make.
