the problem is, Ryan is on a very good contract that ends in one year and he is a good player by basically every regard
in my opinion, Tanev is none of those things. IMO we're talking about a good third-line centre vs. a mediocre second-pairing defenseman with substantial injury issues
but I will wait until I see him on the ice

How so?
Tanev is a top 4 d, Ryan is a 4th liner. A good one, but overpaid. I'd love to see Ryan gone, just not a good value.

After watching Dallas take us apart in our own end, because we had no one that knew how to actually defend, this is a very welcomed addition.

Pair Tanev and Gio and you have an elite shutdown pair to matchup against top lines, and still be able to move the puck
|
I like the idea of Gio/Tanev together late in games as a shutdown pair; but I also like the idea of Tanev with Hanifin so we can let his off his leash a little and expand his offensive game.

a) IMO Ryan is underpaid or (at worst) fairly-paid
b) Ryan is probably the Flames' seventh-best forward, certainly not a fourth-liner

Ryan is a 4C making almost $4M (way too much) whereas Tanev is a second paring D making $4.5, a standard amount. I like Ryan but he can be replaced by a $1.5-2M guy without much impact.

If you are going to take a shot at the board, don't be so lazy about it. EVERY day there are tons of different opinions posted on this board.
Stuff like this is annoying.

I do think that the homerism on this board has risen in recent years. If that’s what you want me to say

That's immediately what I thought when I saw we signed Tanev. He's going to be paired with Giordano all season
This should hopefully allow our best offensive defenseman to take a few more calculated risks and help the forwards, and spend less shifts covering for Brodie's mistakes

Yeah I hadn't considered the possibilities of giving Hanifin and opportunity to shine more offensively.
And Rasmus/Gio could work too.

I see some people have put posts up training to reign in the people thinking we'll sign Hall or Toffoli next.
That is not going to happen without a major salary dump. In fact I don't see Mangiapane getting more than a 2.0AAV right now. Even if Robinson, Rinaldo, Petrovic and cheaply signed Kylington (about $900 000) and Gawdin (about $800 000) fill-out the roster.
Go to the CapFriendly armchair GM and try to finish this roster off.
There won't be any more signings of new players IMO. Just the 4 RFAs.

As good as every other defenceman McDavid skates around.
Pretty unrealistic goal post.

I like it. You gotta think it accents the Markstrom signing well. Our new starter has a defender who played in front of him for 6 years.

If Tanev plays with Gio we would have an undrafted top pairing

So we have a no doubt need for a solid right shot d-man. Tre signs a solid replacement for 4.5 million that will play in our top 4. Top 4 d do not come much cheaper than this. I don't understand the amount of negative response to this signing. Do people think that he is a bottom pairing d-man? What is the alternative? I don't think that this is a homerun but it is solid at minimum.

I was just curious because I've seen more than a few posts about how Brodie was the Flames key to defending McDavid, and Tanev is essentially replacing Brodie.

I'd be worried about his skating. It's definitely not what it was and I vividly remember him getting burned at the start of last season

The more I think about it, this signing may be a good fit. Not a big fan of term, but without that BT may not have had too many options.
One thing that I find concerning is how we can let 2 quality defensmen walk without getting any assets in return. Poor asset management when you consider what we paid to get Travis Hamonic. Does anyone wonder if we could have traded up in the draft especially knowing Brodie was likely Toronto bound?

I liked Tanev for a long time
Not sure if I’ll like Tanev from ages 32-36 or whatever this will be. Definitely not a downgrade on the 2nd pair though.

Tanev is a mobile defensive defenceman. When was the last time we had one of those (aside from Gio).

Neat.
I think it's lazy to assign labels or try to pretend that a community has a singular opinion.
But good for you.
