Default Athletic agent poll- Calgary is 5th most disliked destination by agents

https://theathletic.com/3086187/2022...pics-and-more/

Only Arizona, Ottawa, Buffalo, and Carolina got more votes. The article specifically mentions the aging saddledome as the reason.

Yikes.

So the narrative IS true. Perhaps we can all cut Treliving a little slack on free agent day now.

Quite surprised to see Carolina on there since it's a team on the cusp of winning another Stanley Cup.

I’m a bit suspicious of this list. Honestly, how are the Oilers not on it while Vegas, Boston, St.Louis, Colorado, Anaheim are on it?

I agree that Edmonton and Winnipeg should be on the list.

Vegas I can see, though. A lot of temptation there.

Hmmmm. Just some thoughts as to why.

1) McDavid.
2) Dip#### management that will overpay.
3) No expectations of performance.
4) History of overpaying.
5) New building.
6) Pyschophant media.
7) Longer than usual off season - lots of golf opportunities.
8) Being overpaid.

20 Agents. This is borderline meaningless.

This still doesn't justify overpaying old people.

There are alternatives, such as just drafting and developing your own guys and making trades. There's a reason Carolina is near the top of the standings. It might be related to the fact that they've had 33 draft picks in the past 3 years and have hardly any bad contracts.

But yeah I think it's such a small sample size that it doesn't necessarily mean a lot.

20 agents is representative of 11% of the NHLPA's certified agents. Inferences are made on public policy issues using much smaller populations. Not really a meaningless survey in that context.

Because the Oilers have new facilities. The slight against the Flames is their facilities.

Quote:
The Calgary Flames drew some ire because of their aging facilities, while the Vegas Golden Knights were listed because of how some players have been quickly disposed of when they were no longer useful.
The most concerning thing to me about the article is how many players want to get out of Canada. 60% of surveyed agents would have concern about their player signing in Canada.

Quote:
“I have guys that want out of Canada now and it has nothing to do with the team they’re on.”
This is not ideal at all for a team like the Flames that have poor facilities and some key American players soon to be free agents.

What is happening up there that players want out of Canada so badly? I mean, the States is a non-stop #### show. Why would anyone in their right mind think things are better down here with all the problems that exist? The only benefit I can think of is weather?

It's pretty evident that Canadians and Americans have opposing views on which country is handling things better. We think they are a ####show and they think we are a ####show.

Covid restrictions im guessing.

There are many very absurd ones in place.

Crap answer. Americans don't know #### about Canada. Full stop. Their thoughts and understanding on Canada are embarrassingly simplistic and incomplete. The average American can't even pick out Canada on a map or name more than two provinces. How the hell would they be able to determine Canada was a #### show? How about some specifics please?

Correct.

“I have guys that want out of Canada now and it has nothing to do with the team they’re on.”

“It’s a real concern for me, especially when you consider COVID isn’t going away. It’s just going to become another common illness or the flu at some point. But I don’t know when or how Canada will treat it like that, so it’s certainly something I would talk about with my clients who were UFAs and looking at offers from Canada.”

“Under current Canadian leadership, yeah. It’s an issue. The leadership changes and there’s a new prime minister, then my answer would change.”

“I think it depends on the guy’s situation. If a guy has a family, then I’d be more concerned since the wives and kids are kind of forced to live a more strict life and have less freedom. If a player was single, I don’t think they’d have as much of a problem.”
It kind of sucks that agents would be giving Canada a bit of a negative slant when their clients are receiving offers.

COVID restrictions are a big thing and detracting players from Canada? That's some weak ass crap. The COVID numbers in the US are terrifying because of lack of leadership. People continue to get sick and die with the disease. Our healthcare system is overwhelmed because of lack of leadership and stronger restrictions/mandates. But yes, individual "freedoms" are more important. Hockey players are an ignorant bunch. Just another example.

Crap answer by me? Americans understanding of Canada is irrelevant to how they form their opinions. Americans are all about freedom and Canada right now is still restricting freedoms so it's fairly evident they may form a negative opinion about Canada based on that. I posted another quote where the agent elaborated.

Is that a quote from an agent? What a moron. The agent knows what to do, but public health doesn’t. And the PM matters to him? That makes sense. What a load of ####.

No surprise with AZ being #1 - unless you're at the end of your career or a young guy it's going to be a miserable place to play until the Tempe arena is finished. IF (And this is a gargantuan IF) the Coyotes finally have a stable place to call home and aren't actively tanking this place will be a top destination in the NHL.

Not at all surprised with the list, Calgary weather is absolutely horrible 8 months a year - it's also a pretty boring city during the season and the Dome is old.

Winnipeg should be #1 at all times on this list though
