Icon35 Isles sign Barzal (3 yrs, $7mil AAV)

David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
Per sources, the Islanders and RFA Mathew Barzal have agreed to terms on a 3-year deal.

Andrew Gross @AGrossNewsday
Believe #Isles Mat Barzal in at three years with an AAV of $7 million. But do not have that confirmed yet.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Barzal 3 years. 1) $4 mil. 2) $7mil 3) $10 mil.

Better than Tkachuk's contract in that 10M in yr 3 rather than 9 M.

Seems pretty fair if Tkachuk is $7M, Point is $6.75M, Werenski $5M, McAvoy $4.9M, Dubois $5M, Laine $6.75, Boeser $5.875M.

Barzal is really a special player. I could see him leading the league in assists at some point.

That's a very fair deal for the Isles, Barzal is awesome.

This tweet ...

https://twitter.com/user/status/1347944048640860162

Seems to imply a change with the new MOU with qualifying ... looks like Barzal gets qualified at $8.4M instead of the last year of his contract $10M

If that's a % then Tkachuk is suddenly less of a concern at $7.56M

It doesn't change the fact that he could just take his qualifier and go to UFA in a season.

But it does make the negotiation easier with the qualifier closer to what you'd see as a go forward cap hit.

I don’t think it would be for contacts signed prior to the change but I sure hope so.

The new QO rule in the MOU is that the QO cannot exceed 120% of the AAV of the RFAs expiring contract. However Tkachuk's contract and any contract signed before the MOU was accepted is still subject to the old rule where the QO is the final year's salary.

So Tkachuk's QO will still be $9 million.
