GM denies OEL on the block, but confirms that he is getting calls. There has to be some worry about re-signing, but that would be the same worry that calgary would have fitting him under the cap. I wouldn't doubt a 7-7 deal.
I would think the only way a conversation starts would be brodie-bennett-gilles. That would put calgary into win-now, this year.

We get robbed on that. They get Dougie, and we just get a bunch of crap we don't need.

OEL is a top 10 d man in the league and he's going
Would you trade Gaudreau for max Domi, Alex goligoski, and Anthony duclair?
That's similar value to what is being mentioned as a 'fair offer for OEL'

that's if you look at things logically. When trading with the coyotes, you don't have to use logic, just show fancy stats that prove you're giving a good deal and they'll take it.
I mean OEL was drafted 6th overall in his draft and Bennett was drafted 4th overall, seems like they need to add to move up those 2 spots...

Terrible analogy. If Johnny didn’t have 4 years left on his deal after this season then maybe that would be a decent return.
OEL is going to cost $8-$10M per in 2019 which again makes your Gaudreau comparison completely bunk.

the fan was discussing this earlier today, and it's a fitting rebuttal here.
Look at a deal based around D. Hamilton for OEL. The coyotes get a dman 2 years younger, cost controlled at a reasonable $5.75 till 2021. That's for a 40-50 pt year in and year out type dman.
OEL is the same value offensively (wrt points), is a UFA next year, and likely getting a major pay day ($8M? $9M? $10M??).
I am not saying either team would or should do something like that. However, if one looks at it from that perspective, i don't see it being that unfathomable.

Not really it's not like Gaudreau isn't getting paid well, it's a good deal but OEL is worth more and any team trading for him is getting assurances he's re-signing imo
But it was more just the player value of the two
People like to piece together details of elite players they want and not give up anything of real value
Right now
Brodie has played like an average to below average 2nd pairing d man for 2 years?
Bennett is months away from 'bust' getting mentioned beside his name, he doesn't have any real value outside maybe a draft pick from someone who thinks they can turn him around. Over their last 82 games he's getting outscored by Jake Virtanen.....
Frolik is a good 2 way 2nd line winger, but with no real scoring upside past 40-45 points at this point, who has scored more than 15 goals twice in 8 seasons
How that is getting a number 1 d man who can play 25 minutes a night, qb a pp and play pk?

I don't think you can compare it to Hamilton deal, that was widely panned from the start
Just like it shouldn't be compared to the hall/Larsson deal, which was lopsided the other way
Players who are well known to be available don't get dealt for cheap, it's always situations where it's a surprise, like all the reports of GMs saying they were shocked to Friedman or McKenzie that Hamilton was even available
If OEL gets moved it's treated like an auction

i'm not comparing the hamilton to calgary to what is going to happen for OEL. I'm suggesting a deal of d. hamilton for OEL is not light years apart from a value perspective.

I love how Sam Bennett is considered a bust at 21 by some. Ridiculous.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all. Not saying he's a bust from my point of view but I can understand it from others point of view.
21 years old or not, this is a guy that was picked 4th overall and there was even some conversation of him going 1st that year. So expectations for a top 5 overall player is going to be high and the fact that he's trending negatively, I don't see why he wouldn't be in "bust" conversation.

Not that I disagree with what you are saying, but I can see why some are applying that brush to him. Expectations are/were pretty high on him. In the same light, Nail Yakupov was labeled a bust at the same age. I guess the thing to consider is if you don't want to be labeled a bust, produce more than 1 goal and 4 points in 24 games, and look lost on most occasions. I'm hoping for a turnaround in the next 2/3 of the season, as that was one of things I called at the start of the year. The Flames need him to step up and become a player. If he doesn't, he'll likely get the Curtis Lazar treatment in the future.

A bronze bust in the Hall of Fame.

It is still early but this year is starting to be more than just concerning. Just very little positives to like from his game this year.
He's not even playing with the grit/tenacity that he has provided in the past. Still too early to be called a bust, but I get why a lot of the fan base is very down on his game.

5 years from now people will be citing Martin St.Louis breaking out as a 28 year old when people call Bennett a bust.
In a decade, people will bring up Jason Blake scoring more than 20 goals when he was 30 and scoring more than 30 goals (40 goals in 2007) for the first time as a 33 year old when Bennett's status as a bust is questioned.
When Bennett retires from hockey at 35 after accomplishing nothing in the KHL, the same people will get mad at him for giving up on himself right before he was going to break out.
