I believe it works on most set top boxes but only some will support HD broadcasts (needs mpeg 4 comparability or something.)

Took a quick look at the offerings. It's not bad, I'm seeing some stuff I never saw on Netflix that I would like to watch.

Such as?
Honestly asking. Don't know why I'd switch from Netflix otherwise.

I've been wanting to see Modern Family. Then I saw The Simpsons movie. They have Borat when Netflix has Bruno. They have the original Starship Troopers and Netflix has the 2 sequels. They have more seasons of Californication.
It just looks upon first viewing that it is a different collection from Netflix. As someone who prefers legal online streaming of TV and movies, I like the 2nd option. I'll take Netflix and shomi once I cancel my cable again.

I found it odd that they had seasons 1 and 5 of Star Trek: TNG, and then when I checked later there was only season 1 available.

The interface for Shomi is no where near as intuitive or friendly as NetFlix.
I haven't really seen any programming so far that makes Shomi a must have for me. I use Netflix through a regional switcher so that I can access Canadian, American, British or Brazilian offerings.
The only thing that caught my eye on Shomi was the comedy offerings from the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and the Halifax Comedy Festival.

So it looks like the episodes are still there for season 5, they just don't appear in a separate Season 5 list. It also looks like they have the entire series of Dr. Who, so I guess I should take the opportunity to actually watch this show now. I stopped after season 1.

FYI if you have the crappy old school guide that makes browsing impossible you can browse in the app or online and add things to your wish list. When you open Shaw On Demand the titles will be on your wish list.
Apparently an update will happen around Christmas to replace the crappy SOD guide.

Is there a way to see the current list of content without starting your 30 day free trial?

Rogers and Shaw signed a deal with Amazon to stream their original content. So if you're looking for a legal way to watch Transparent, Shomi is it.

I like it. It won't replace Netflix as they have largely different content, but the two will go hand in hand in my quest to cut the cable.

You need the actual cable to get shomi or crave. They are only offered to subscribers with the respective companies at this point.

Not quite. Still works if you are Shaw internet only customer. So if you don't have cable TV you can still get Shomi.
