Unlocked Netflix still wins.

What an awful name too, sounds a type of sushi.

I'm looking forward to all of the allegations, unfounded or not, that Shaw and Rogers are preferring shomi traffic on their network to Netflix and others. The price point seems a bit steep if the goal is to compete with Netflix and attract new users. I think to be successful, they either have to be a cheaper alternative to Netflix or offer a superior product (i.e., have stuff Netflix doesn't have).

From the press release, it looks like Shomi is launching with for more content then even US netflix. US netflix has 11388 unique assets from last online counts. Shomi is supposed to debut with close to 14000. Mind you the 30% Canadian content requirements are making it difficult to actually do a fair comparison between what is actually available.

It all boils down to content. This might be a worthy product if they have captivating content.

And will Shaw/Rogers will exempt this from their bandwidth caps?

This was my first thought as well, especially with all the allegations towards Comcast throttling Netflix traffic in the US.

Regardless, with the rapid rise of online television, there really seems to be a conflict of interest for cable companies that offer these types of services when they also have the ability to choke off any traffic directed towards a competitor's site. Perhaps this will open the door to net neutrality debates in Canada as well.

This is disappointing, exclusive licences for key shows is really bad for the consumer. I don't want to have to buy 6 different online and cable services to get the shows I want to watch.

Isn't there already this to a degree? If you have Bell or Virgin, you can watch TSN live on your mobile devices (http://www.tsn.ca/mobiletv/). If you have Shaw, no such luck. However, you can watch live streaming of Global programming but only with "participating tv service provider credentials" (http://www.globaltv.com/apps/).

My understanding is that watching through set top box will not count towards bandwidth cap. Access through public internet will (xbox, handhelds).

my key questions:

so which gets commercials/ads first (netflix/shomi)?

also, curious about what content there will be?

net neutrality is important, and if rogers start throttling bandwidth, that would be in very very poor taste.

Shomi for sure. Canadian content providers thrive on advertisements. It may launch ad and commercial free but I doubt it would stay that way very long.

Shomi is supposed to be available as a beta release tomorrow to Rogers and Shaw customers. It is supposed to be available as a free one month trial. I'll likely check it out in order to see what sort of programming they have available but I won't be signing up at $9 a month.

Trying to sign up for it to give it a shot, but it looks like Shaw is having troubles with their Customer sign on. Anyone on the Rogers try this out yet?

They are pretty limited on the devices they can view from, I wanted to test it out with the PS4 browser.

It's live!

and it doesn't work...

Edit: Got it working.

Not bad selection. TV is pretty limited. HD stream seems OK. 3 month trial for Shaw and Rogers customers.

Yeah, I just got it working as well and will check things out after the Flames game tonight. Three months free is pretty nice.

For anyone that is interested you have to log into your Shaw account and activate the Shomi service under "add service" which will enable you to sign into the Shomi app with your Shaw customer id or Shaw email address.

Is it also accessible through the digital terminals, or do you need another device that supports it?
