Default Australian wildfires

I didn’t see a thread for this, but given the magnitude of this record setting disaster, I figure there would be some discussion on this

A video recently has gone viral where Australian PM, Scott Morrison, visited a township which was engulfed in flames and resulted in lost homes, businesses, livestock and three lives. The locals weren’t so welcoming

Like forcing this woman to shake his hand:

https://twitter.com/user/status/1212672178052685824

And trying to force a handshake with this firefighter who lost his home and did not receive any help from the federal government

https://twitter.com/user/status/1212739227122667520

And he was jeered and chased away by more locals

I know many of you dislike Trudeau, but i don’t see him literally turning his back to natural disaster victims like this bloke has

Good thread and appropriate user name. I’d better respond since I live here and have Fire in my name.

This has been so devastating and my heart aches for everyone who has lost a home or a loved one. I’m also amazed and saddened by the dedicated volunteers, some of whom have spent months away from their families and lives on the front lines. Here in Brisbane blue sky only just appeared days ago after 6 weeks of smoke but the rest of the country is still on fire and the scope is unimaginable. Just look at this map of southern NSW. It is insane and this is just part of the country.

Spoiler!

Yeah our PM Morrison makes Trudeau look good. The country is crying out for leadership and getting none. He is a failed ad man who won an election legitimately proposing to do nothing and is finding out the hard way that actually doing nothing but spin and deflection doesn’t go far in an emergency. To make things worse before the handshake dramas he ignored warnings from fire chiefs, made religious freedom his legislative priority, told victims to be inspired by cricket, and took off on a Hawaiian vacation without telling the public. Such a tool. I’m glad to see him internationally embarrassed and hope voters remember this at the next election.

Despite the actions of our so called leaders the dedication of the fire fighters leaves me in awe and proud to be Australian. I really hope things get under control but this could just be the beginning. This is on a scale never seen in recorded history and summer has only just begun with higher temperatures to come.

As firefighters remained on high alert, police revealed 103 of the destructive fires that had lashed Queensland since September were deliberately lit.

Figures obtained by AAP revealed police had dealt with 98 people - 31 adults and 67 juveniles - for deliberately setting fires.

A 16-year-old boy found to have started a fire that razed 14 homes in central Queensland and dealt with under the state's Youth Justice Act.

Two more teens, 14 and 15, were charged with endangering property by fire over a blaze that destroyed two homes and forced hundreds to flee.

More than 120 fires are still being investigated and more people could be charged.

Back to the original post, I'm absolutely galled that the PM has this nerve to touch people who don't want anything to do with him. Absolutely terrible optics. What an idiot.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen someone force handshakes on people repeatedly. He’s doing nothing to help his already flattened image.

Saw a satellite image yesterday that stunned me a little, there's one spot where you could almost see individual tongues of flame, like in a campfire only from SPACE! That is horrifying.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone force handshakes on people like that before. It's like grabbing someone's hand and making them give you a high five. Guy looks like a complete moron.

Some of the pictures I've seen are heartbreaking and frightening. This is a snap shot of what the future looks like with Climate Change - record temperatures with drought combined to displace people's lives...and economies.

Yesterday’s headlines included climate events regarding Norway, India, and Indonesia. Norway is 25C above average; they should be around -6c but it was 19c. A region in India is usually around 40c and it was 9c. The cool temps for the Indian region caused major issues and resulted in services in major centres being halted. Indonesia is being impacted by torrential rains and flooding.

Sure, I had initially used the word weather and changed it. I think it’s arguable weather it’s climate vs weather as the answer will come with time. My point, that you missed, was that the extremes we are witnessing are not isolated to record high temps and drought.

Pretty dire situation and very sad. Hard to fathom there's basically 2 months of 'summer' to go.

He’s truly an idiot. The locals were living in ruins and he thought people would welcome him like a hero. At least listen to what that woman had to say. She was calm in asking for more help yet he literally turned away from her.

The guy clearly was hoping to get good photo ops with no intention to listen to any of the victims there.
