Van Halen 1984 - Jump is the second worst song in their entire catalogue
Yeah. I've heard it so many times that it's only novelty is it's familiarity. Personally I don't think it's near their best album as Panama, Jump, and Hot for Teacher are IMO very generic 80's metal. The best David Lee Roth Van Halen album IMO is their debut album but 5150 is the one I am most fond of as not many popular bands have managed to change their lead singer at the peak of their popularity and deliver one of their best albums ever and I think the key was that the band didn't pretend that they could just make the same music with a different singer. They adapted and changed and the result was a brilliant album.

Van Halen 2 is probably my fave, only because their debut has been played to death. It's another almost perfect album as it has the crappy "Dance the Night Away" as the second track. I don't mind the Hagar stuff, but it has too much keyboard (Eddie, you're the best in the world, we don't want to hear you play keyboard).

I feel like the change from 2002 to 2018 reflects not only the growth of Pitchfork into a more mainstream media company, but also the lull in popularity of garage/guitar rock right now. You would think Pitchfork would know better than anyone how the popular music zeitgeist will eventually cycle back again.
More examples: Husker Du's Zen Arcade fell from 32 to 68. New Day Rising fell out of the top 200 completely. The Police had two albums (Synchronicity and Ghost in the Machine) in the top 100 list in 2002. They are nowhere to be found in 2018. Albums from Gang of Four and Mission of Burma are also gone in 2018. Meanwhile, new additions to the top 100 list in 2018 include two Madonna albums, two Janet Jackson albums, and two Sade albums.

It's always been interesting to me how some popular acts maintain their stature 30 years later, and others don't. The Police and REM were both huge in their day. Today, they've fallen out of the popular zeitgeist while Madonna and Prince are as highly-regarded as ever. Dire Straits were the biggest band in the world in 1985, and highly regarded by musicians; they're virtually unknown by music aficionados today, while the Talking Heads still have street cred. Fickle is the word.
