If they do a prequel, I bet it will cover the time period of Robert's Rebellion (assuming they don't show a lot more of that in the next two seasons). There's a lot of content already written in the books for that time period that has only been briefly mentioned on the show.

While I do think that storyline would be great the way this show has done so far... I think the current show has already covered the majority of the "Prequel" other than some more hearsay, which is really already what we've been shown is based on.
So while any more in regards to the characters and storyline would be welcomed and I'm sure fantastic, I'm not certain that there's a boatload of "cannon" to base it off of

For a prequel they could do so much. They could have a series of seasons like Fargo. Make them all in the same world but jump around through time season by season with new actors each time. I own the World of Ice and Fire book about the history of Westeros and there are multiple parts that would lend itself well to adaptation. That is assuming they wanted to explore that stuff.
They could also do stuff like Dunk and Egg which mainly covers minor players and isn't as big picture. Help show what Westeros was like for the regular joes with lots of room for cameos or references to the world we've come to know.

Oh god no it would be book four all over again!
Reference not to Dunk and Egg (which I haven't read yet) but the aimless wanderings and plodding of the fourth venture into the world.

Robert's Rebellion makes the most sense. It's referenced so much by so many throughout the entire series and it shaped the world Game of Thrones takes place it.
Start with a two-episode Tourney at Harrenhal setting the whole thing up.

There was also talk about the prequel being during the time of Aegon, the Conqueror, Targaryen and the initial invasion of Westeros.

That would be epic, and you could throw in some Doom of Valyria as well.

“We have a 140-page outline for what’s only going to be six episodes for the final season,” Benioff said during the presentation, which means the concluding arc will be one less episode than the already-shortened seventh season.

I'm fine with this. It should mean no more "filler" episodes.

Hopefully the change in pacing isn't totally jarring. I'm sure they've got it handled.

HBO has a few of the highest budgeted shows ever (Rome, GOT, Vinyl, Westworld). I'm just thankful they've heavily invested in such quality content (well, not Vinyl obviously). And really I would be cool if they just wanted one more 10 episode season. There really isn't that much left to work out storyline wise, unless they wanna bloat things.

No series is immune to filler episodes but I don't find GOT has had a lot of the filler episodes like say TWD where they will spend an entire episode on one or two characters on backstory stuff that doesn't really move the overall show forward.
