I've heard that the way they mix up the gene pool is to marry the daughters off to other colonies all over Canada/US. Pretty sure the whole 'hole in the sheet' thing is urban legend. Just doesn't fit for me considering how religious most of them are; to let some greasy degenerate smash their daughter's flaps in for a couple bucks? I mean let's be honest - who is going to be signing up for this? Guys with cauliflowers on their junk that's who.

Of course it's a second hand story. They are all second hand stories.

I've heard of this myth since I was a teenager, and it has always been "so-and-so's older brother's buddy was in this bar in Drumheller bla bla bla..." or "my uncle used to work with this guy, and when he was a kid yada yada yada...".

Considering the majority of people on most colonies are cousins, they usually have to marry off to other colonies. The majority of marriages are like that.

I hate it. Thought way more of NatGeo than this. Just a crappy show that does absolutely nothing to portray what is basically a different culture in an accurate and respectful manner.

Members of the show have come out and said the producers staged a lot of the stuff to make it 'better.'

Hmmm, hadn't heard that. This colony seems A LOT different than the ones I know of (in southwestern MB and southeastern SK), but I wonder now if that has to do with the staging.

Apparently a 'party' in one of the shows that really portrays the Hutterites in a really bad way religiously, at least internally.....was staged.

There has been huge internal backlash by the Hutterites. The colony seems different because they are different, but Collins makes them almost 'bad.' There is very little in the show that does the Hutterites justice. There is a lot of good in the Hutterite system, a lot of good people, a lot of good lessons.....and Meet the Hutterites does nothing to showcase that.

For a show that could have easily been one of the most interesting shows on TV considering it is about a group of people that lives amongst most people who post on CP. We all see them, interact with them at times, but really don't know that much about them....it isn't very well done at all.

Collins is a ######bag and should be banned from producing any film or TV show ever again.

To be honest, I bet life on the colony is pretty...mundane, though. I don't know if people would sit through 8 hours of that, just like they wouldn't want to watch 8 hours of me doing b.s. around my house.

Legendary post.

"greasy degenerate smash their daughter's flaps in for a couple bucks?"

"Guys with cauliflowers on their junk"

hilarious

serious question, are you or your family runaways?

I was really surprised to see the drinking. My experience with Alberta Hutterites is that they aren't to drink.

I agree the show had a very heavy feeling of being staged.

The scene with the older women telling Bertha about stealing the younger girl's cell was painful.

I did my internship in Lethbridge for a year. Save-On-Foods there often had Hutterite pancakes in stock. Those pancakes are like gold if gold were edible.

Also befriend a number of ex-Hutterites. They were all super-nice and incredibly friendly. Though one of the younger ones kept insisting that rock music was of the Devil. Other than that he was a cool kid. His name was Fritz.

The Hutterites around us will do anything for beer. When it comes to productive Hutterite colonies, I think they are on the bottom of the food chain though.

I haven't really heard of colonies that are anti-alcohol. There are a few I would imagine, but for the most part it seems pretty open.

I've actually heard the Calgary Wranglers used to take rookies out to do the deed and the vets would keep the money to go get drunk after. As someone else noted, it's apparently more like a rookie punishment having to do do a husky mother of eight rather than the privilege of smashing some hot daughter. They also both said nobody could be drunk at all when they went or Hutterites would give them the boot. I heard it from two different guys that played at different times and didn't know each other. Still I've always assumed it's probably an urban legend that just originated on the team before both of them were there.

One story I'm about certain is true is that I guy I used to know that drove a delivery truck to them would smuggle some porn magazines in for something like 4 times the cover cost.

Another funny one I've heard is that apparently this guy found some noob Hutterite salesmen that were selling fresh chickens from a van, the only problem being they were still alive. That one came from a big BS'er and doesn't seem very plausible. I'm wondering if it's also a bit of an urban myth that's also been passed around a bit?
