Melnyk: Sens rebuild will take 1 or 2 seasons. Plan to spend to cap from 2021 to 2025
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
At a corporate event last night in Toronto, OTT owner Eugene Melnyk outlined the Senators’ hockey operations plans for the next few years...(1/x)
Melnyk: “the expectation is that the Senators rebuilding plan will take another season or two from now, but when his general manager confirms that the Senators have all the pieces of the foundation in place, he made the following pledge to the guests in attendance”...(2/x)
“The Senators will be all-in again for a five-year run of unparalleled success – where the team will plan to spend close to the NHL’s salary cap every year from 2021 to 2025.” (3/4)
Melnyk “reiterated that the Senators’ current rebuild is a blueprint on how to bring the Stanley Cup home to its rightful place in Ottawa.” 4/4

If they could keep Duchene and Stone, they have some nice pieces with Tkachuk and Chabot. Having the first overall pick would be nice though

signing stone and duchene seems like a necessary first step to fulfill that promise.

I don't even get why you would say that. Fans are not stupid. I'd feel a lot better hearing honesty. We have some key pieces in place. Were going to need to re-build. In the end there will be some growing pains but we want to build this the right way and bring home a Cup.

Just give them ten each and worry about the rest later. Without them they’re boned.

A season or two??? Maybe if they were a desired landing spot for UFA’s and they hit some home runs in the draft.

They do seem to draft well, if only they had their own draft pick

Kind of a stupid thing to say. No one knows how long a rebuild will take. Yeah the Sens could re-sign Stone and Duchene and turn into a cup contending cap team in two years but they could just as likely lose both of them, need a 5 year rebuild, and any attempt to be a cap team would mean overpriced FAs.

The team will plan to spend close to the NHL salary cap? Depending on how their rebuild goes I'm going to assume plans can change.

"close to the salary cap" is code for "the salary floor plus a few dollars"
Sorry Melnyk, but after how you guys handled the Turris extension no one believes you.

I trust he'd be able to make a go of that plan better than that trainwreck up north, though.

Trying to get Stone and Duchene to buy in and re-sign with the Sens on bargain deals.
Part of me hopes they just stay in Ottawa so they don't end up in places like San Jose, Anaheim, Vegas or Nashville.

The funniest thing is he is essentially saying "once 2025/2026 rolls around, we're a floor team again".

I think I might actually believe more things said by Donald Trump than Eugene Melnyk, and that is a terrible thought to have.

What a weird thing to say.
Way i interpret that is that they will wholeheartedly spend some day, but not today. Bye Stone, bye Duchene.
