Are we capable of winning 16/28 possible games?

Yes. Especially with coach Sutter.

The key is making the playoffs first. Markstrom or Vladar need to help accomplish that, otherwise we will never know.

Let's see them win back to back games first...

5v5 within 1 Goal:

Corsi For: 57.8% (2nd)
xGF %: 55.5% (2nd)
xGF per 60: 2.95 (7th)
xGA per 60: 2.36 (3rd)
GF %: 52.5% (12th)
GF per 60: 2.96 (3rd)

Shooting %: 8.1% (19th)
Save %: .895 (31st)

The biggest surprise to me is even our Goals For is pretty elite in this view - 3rd in Goals For per 60.

If they fix the PP and get even average goaltending then I truly believe the team could do damage come playoff time.
I don't think you can take a lot from that as it's very similar to how Kings looked like in their post-cup winning seasons under Sutter. Good advanced stats but not good enough to make the playoffs.

Oh I do. I just don't think those stats are something you hitch your wagon to in regards to playoff optimism. The goaltending needs to be better and the team needs a bit of puck luck as it seems like they haven't got a lot of bounces this season. They are due for some good bounces I would think.

Puck luck has been absolutely brutal this year for sure. That Coalman breakaway post yesterday? Ugh.

IMO it's similar but still different.

13-14 (Won Cup)
GF/60: 2.06 (25th)
Save Percentage: .935
PP: 15.1% (27th)
PK: 83.1 (11th)

14-15:
GF/60: 2.32 (10th)
.926 Save Percentage
PP: 19.0% (11th)
PK: 80.9 (16th)

15-16
GF/60: 2.13 (16th)
.929 Save Percentage
PP: 20.0 (8th)
PK: 81.4 (15th)

16-17
GF/60: 1.92 (26th)
.920 Save Percentage
PP: 19.1% (15th)
PK: 84.6% (5th)

Outside of 14-15 those teams couldn't score but still had amazing goaltending.

This Flames team is a bit different in that it's mostly Goaltending and PP that are the issues..

22-23
GF/60: 2.79 (8TH)
.902 Save Percentage
PP: 19.0% (25th)
PK: 81.6% (9th)

If this team had the goaltending that Sutter generally gets from his teams though it's not even a discussion, hell if they get .910 it's probably enough.

Isn't it funny that the two things that you need to be successful in the playoffs are the same two things that are keeping us out of the playoffs:

1. Goaltending
2. Power Play (ie special teams)

I'm optimistic because:

The goalies (Markstrom anyways) can play much better.
The PP can be a LOT better.
They can't miss 2 on 0's or breakaways all the time.
Huberdeau can be better.

It's not even asking a lot for these things to happen or be slightly better for the rest of the season. They can do it.

Welp I did an exercise on trying to predict the winner (no loser points) of the remainder of the games for:

COL, L.A, SEA , Edm, MIN, NAS and Flames.

I did not do it for the rest of Western conf. teams unless they played one of the above.

Here are my results after the top 3 in the West:

4-COL: 111 pts
5-SEA: 102 pts
6- L.A: 97 pts
7-CGY: 95 pts
8-EDM:92 pts
9-MIN: 89 pts
10- NAS: 82 pts

So Calgary is in!

What about after the Philly game?

The Flames definitely have the talent to get in. Their problem is between their ears.

They control their own destiny with games vs Minnesota ect. Hopefully they can get their act together.

I think Family Day (PHI loss) will mark the point in the season where their playoff chances fizzled.

Sorry to be a pessimist.

The Detroit loss felt like that but then Minnesota stalled out at the same time, so it bought them another lifeline.

They had a chance to jump in front but didn't take it. Now minny has taken that opportunity and is running with it.

I sure do hope they have a 7 game streak somewhere in them..

Even my eternal, naive optimism is starting to rattle after tonight's OOT. Final push is far from impossible, but you just never know with this current team. Maybe they will go on a heater at some point, maybe not. I have reserved faith in them, not counting them in or out right now, though a loss tonight could very well seal their season

I’m one of those who thought they’d make it because of how weak their schedule was.

However they’re now losing to the weak teams, so my optimism is gone. At this point I don’t see them making it. But they’re not far off from being a decent team. The goaltending and puck luck needs to be better next year.

Wrong thread dudes.

We still control our own destiny. No point looking at the OOT yet.

Round 1 - Flames 4, Jets 2
Round 2 - Flames 4, Kings 3
Round 3 - Flames 4, Stars 2
Round 4 - Flames 4, Bruins 1

How's that for optimism?

Think it's impossible to play the Jets in Round 1 and Kings in Round 2.

But like your spirit!
