So not to humble brag, but a point I want to reiterate to some job searchers here and I reiterate to my friends that are currently looking… networking is the best thing you can throughout your career. Any time an opportunity to network comes up take it. Meet people. Work later if needed.

I got poached earlier this year by a competitor and decided it was a good opportunity. I was just approached again by another company offering an even better spot. Now , I’m not sure if I’ll proceed but both opportunities came exclusively from networking. You can never do too much networking!

My past 3 jobs I have had were a result not of formal application and interviews, but because someone in the company knew me, reached out, and said "we want you here"

I still had a couple interviews, but there were more along the lines of "is this a fit for both of us" as opposed to "who are you"

100% network as much as you can - I don't think people understand how many jobs get filled while never being publicly posted because of networking.

For those of you are are contracting and have no employer extended health benefits, are you purchasing your own? When I got laid off over a year ago I was able to get on AB Cross and they waived some of the waiting periods because I was coming off a group plan.

After a year with them, they don't quite cover enough so I'm looking at other options.

Yah am in the process of doing this
If you’re with Apega then go through the Apega site to link to Manulife Engineers which is quite stellar.
Chambers insurance is pretty good too and you can contact FFG Solutions to get a quote.
Greenshield Canada also has some decent offerings.
These were all more suited to our needs than the XYZ-Life companies, blue cross, conventional Manulife

Thanks, I'll check them out. I'm an employee now at the company I've been contracting at but they only have a handful of us in Canada (they're based out of the US), so I'm just getting an additional lump sum on my paycheck to cover benefits myself.

Started a new job on the 12th.

So good to be doing something again.

It just hurts a bit when, due to payday timings, between 2-3 weeks after I started, my bank account balance will be lesser than it would have been had I continued on EI. Of course, that changes quickly on payday. Hard to celebrate when one is still in “spend like you are unemployed” mode.

Heya Captain, just a heads up on your posting, it's a "CPHR" designation rather than a CHRP in Alberta now due to Ontario being jerks to HR Professionals in the rest of the country and calling their entry level designation (CHRP) the same as the professional level designation (now CPHR) everywhere else.

My son is part way through second year engineering at UofA. He needs to be in Calgary for personal reasons and is planning to switch to UofC. Unfortunately he is missing a first year prerequisite (the curricula are different) so he is making up one missing subject online and looking for work. So far he has come up dry, looking for anything outside the service industry.

If anyone has any suggestions I can pass on to him it would be appreciated.

If your son has a UofC account, he can sign into UCalgary's Elevate (formerly known as CareerLink) job board. Lots of positions (internships or part-time) for students from what I've seen. Their Career Services office is also pretty helpful.

If not, the UofA probably has their own job board too.
