Treliving spoke last night about how active things will be once the protection lists are released and how teams will try and acquire players left unprotected via Vegas

Spec was on 960 this morning talked about his article that suggested the Flames could protect Brouwer and leave Ferland exposed. Kudos to Pinder to challenging him on it. Spec just showed a remarkably shallow understanding of the Flames' situation - and couldn't seem to grasp that ultimately Brouwer is responsible for putting himself in a situation to be exposed through poor play. Awful take.
He then went on to suggest that McDavid could take either a sub 10M deal or max term - because....well Edmonton?

Anaheim has a deal in place already with Las Vegas so they didn't need Bieksa to waive it.
It'll still be interesting. I've gotta think, if Vegas isn't taking Vatanen or Manson the Ducks are going to have to give them quite a bit in the deal.

God he's a complete idiot, and on top of it he sounds like the typical know it all jack$$$ with an opinion on everything.
Yeah he was so assertive on the whole keep Brouwer and dump Ferland. Because dumping Brouwer would make Treliving look bad and Idiot von Spector knows GM's.
And the McDavid thing was laughable, he'll take under 10 because he's a great guy.
The rumor is that the initial starting point is short term top dollar and McDavid has control. I also tend to think that Chia saying he'll sign McDavid first and Draisaitl second is going to end up with Draisaitl holding out at the start of the season.

The best part is where he said because it was Milan Lucic's first year as a FA (Same logic he used with Brouwer) he will be much better next season. lol. They must add delusion to the water up there.

His basis on protecting Brouwer was based on his "experience" over the years that teams don't sign UFA's on long term deals and then decide a year later they don't want him. Pinder challenged him saying the guy was a disappointment that ended up on the 4th line so you could excuse the Flames for not feeling they got what they bargained for. So for anyone that may be concerned that Ferland may be left unprotected just know that there is no rumour or evidence the Flames think this way and it was simply Spector's opinion based on his "experience over the years". Nothing more.
The McDavid stuff was also humorous as he said McDavid is only 21 and has his entire career to make big $$$. He may want to accept less so the Oilers can build the team around him and cash in on his next contract. Sounds totally plausible except players never accept discounts. Monahan didn't, Gaugreau didn't, etc. No agent will ever recommend his client take less money for the benefit of his team as McDavid could suffer some major concussions as an Oiler which may derail his career and future earnings. Every player should be trying to get as much money as possible on every contract because there's no guarantees that his career will go as planned. He's really, really trying hard to create some plausible sense of hope that McDavid is going to take a discount for the Oilers.

^And the other thing Spec was ignoring was that regardless of his "experience" this specific situation (expansion draft) is unusual. So that past experience really doesn't matter when teams have to make trade off decisions over who to expose and who not to. Absent that - would the Flames be looking to cut bait with Brouwer? Probably not. But with that factored in, it completely changes the decision. He seemed totally oblivious to that.
REALLY poor analysis for someone who gets paid to do this.

I liked how he said McDavid would choose getting a cup over money by taking less so the Oilers could build a team. First, what are the chances that any team gets a cup, no matter how stacked? Ask Iggy how that works. Second, by that logic, McDavid should take league minimum and really give the Oilers some room. Third, why not make bank now, for as short a term as possible and then fly the coop as a UFA at a still young age, to a big market, elite team?
McDavid also might not want his contract to overlap the next CBA (2022). That's when he would be a UFA at the very earliest. The 2005 CBA rolled back existing salaries. I'd rather be a UFA with a new CBA than have the CBA affect my existing contract.
