Being a new customer you should be able to get a good deal with either. Do your research and check sites like RFD. If Telus Fibre were offered in my neighbourhood I would probably go with them, but the best Telus can do in my area is something like Telus 75, so I go with Shaw instead.

I would give Shaw a slight edge over Telus but really there is little to nothing that differentiates the companies unless you live in an area where Telus does not have good service. Older communities might not have fibre service from Telus so that would be where Shaw has a significant advantage.

If fibre in your area, Telus
If not, then it really doesn't matter. Both suck

Pretty much this, if you have fiber in your area Telus is a no-brainer. Shaw can't compete with it. If you're in an area where Telus can't offer fast speeds, Shaw can be much much better

They both provide equally mediocre Internet access at exorbitantly high prices while sucking equally bad from the customer service perspective. I think this summarizes it pretty well. Oh, and Telus loves telling us on TV how much of the money they took from us they use to support worthy community causes. They pay millions of our dollars in advertising to do so.

Shaw for me because of the cell phone plans you can get when you have their home internet...free talk and text phones for all my kids is pretty tough to beat

I find that Telus offers much better cable packages with more channels, plus I enjoy their interface a lot more.
Also, I found their customer service to be impeccable. Very low stress and easy to deal with when adding/subtracting services.

Yes, they both suck equally. and thoroughly.
However, as some have said, if you have fibre to your house, go with Telus. It is infinitely better.
I just switched from Shaw to Telus, for that reason. Working from home, both Mrs Root and I VPN in to our respective offices every day. Even with gigabite internet, Shaw was a constant struggle. I would usually test at about 40mb down and 20 up. And it was inconsistent, sometimes being unusable.
With Telus, I got 1.5 GB, and even when we are each on full VPN, I consistently get 900 up and down (computer is limited to a gig) in any room in the house.
It is not even in the same universe as what I was putting up with from Shaw

Moving back to Calgary after 10 years. Ten years ago Telus sucked so bad I will probably never deal with them for the rest of my life. Neither will family and relatives. They were so bad 10 plus years ago.
Shaw had been really good for all my family for the past decade.
Today as much as Telus has pissed me off, I cannot recommend Shaw. I am not switching from Shaw family has some good discounts and for most of the time it works well.
It is more like the devil you know argument.
I would recommend getting the best deal you can regardless of the company.

That should be enough to forget Shaw even exists
Personally I like Telus for everything except their customer service and price.

When fibre hits my neighborhood I’ll be going to Telus. Been with Shaw since the 90’s.
All I want is my Shaw email addy.

I was concerned about keeping my Shaw email as well which I've had for more than 20 years. The good news is that you can keep your email if you move away from Shaw but the bad news is that you have to pay them a few bucks a month for the address.

We’ll, I’ve learned something new today. Do you know how much they charge?

I just tried to look up the info and apparently my comment is outdated. In the past they offered an email continuation at $5 per month but they scrapped that a couple years ago and now once they suspebd/cancel your email it is gone. It is possible to transfer an existing email from one account to another though to keep it active (ie. From an account you are closing to a friend or family members account.)

How does one find out whether Telus has installed fibre in their neighborhood?
