Default Stanley Cup Droughts

Recently there have been numerous droughts being broken in pro sports:

-Leicester City wins their first EPL title after 132 years
-Cleveland Cavaliers win their first NBA title after 45 years
-Western Bulldogs win their first Aussie Rules title in 62 years
-Cronulla Sharks win their first Aussie NRL title after 50 years.
-Chicago Cubs win their first World Series in 108 years.
-Ireland beats the All Blacks for the first time in 111 years.

This got me wondering, what NHL team will be the next to break their drought and will it happen this season?

There are currently 6 teams with 40+ year droughts:

Toronto and St Louis: 48 seasons
Buffalo and Vancouver: 45 seasons
Washington: 41 seasons
Philly: 40 seasons

My guess: the trend continues in the NHL the season and your 2017 Stanley Cup Champions are the Washington Capitals.

Apparently their parade was the 7th largest gathering in human history and the largest in the western hemisphere.

5 million people estimated at the Cubs parade. That's more than half the population of metro Chicago.

As for the Stanley Cup, I think St Louis will be the first of that group of 40+ year droughts to win it.

It was a tough call for me between Washington and St Louis. I just think the Blues are on a down trend now and their cup window closed last season.

If the Caps or Blues don't win the cup in the next couple years then I think the Sabres become the new favourites to break their curse.

As a historically cursed city with no championships in any major sport, obviously Buffalo would be the next logical city to break it. Right?

Flames haven't won in the Honda Center in 300 years or something like that

Flames aren't that far from 30 and will almost certainly get there. Pretty depressing that this team has been mediocre for my entire memory, other than two or three years which resulted in first round exits.

No Canadian team has won the cup since before I was born.

It's really amazing that so many Canadian teams have gone this long without winning a cup.

Not really, prior to the salary cap due to the US dollar it was incredibly cost-prohibitive to compete and in the meantime the Flames, Oilers, Canucks and Senators have made the Finals, they just lost.

The Flames have the 9th longest drought at 26 seasons behind the Jets/Coyotes at 36 and the Islanders at 32.

In a 30 team league you should be able to win the cup once every 30 years which give the Flames another few seasons.

Who wins a championship first the Bills or the Sabres?

It looks like they won their league in 2004 so not really on a drought. It is kind of depressing for Buffalo their only sporting success is from a minor league baseball team.

The Montreal Forum cursed us forever once we won the cup on their ice in 1989

Don't forget the Bandits! 2008 NLL Champions!

I think the Sabres are closer to contending for a Stanley Cup than the Bills are to a Super Bowl. Neither team is that close. If things go well and Eichel progresses as anticipated, we might see the Sabres get a decent shot at it in the next 3-5 years.

I think Washington has the best shot at it this season. But I'm not totally convinced they have what it takes. If we're talking later than just this season, it wouldn't surprise me if the Leafs won the Cup in the next 5-10 years.

Capitals have a pretty solid and complete team, now if Ovechkin could just perform in the head to head matches against Crosby..
I like OV, much more than I do Crosby but it seems he always buckles under the pressure when playing against the Pens.
I wouldn't be surprised if Washington wins the Cup in the next 1-3 years, but it is now or never for Ovechkin.
