Flames History of the Calgary Flames Drafting in the Top 10

The Flames have been in Calgary since 1980.

Their first Top 10 draft pick wasn't until 12 years later.

Since then, they have only picked in the Top 10 eight more times.

So over 36 years, Calgary has picked in the Top 10 only 25% of the time.

1992 - Corey Stillman - #6
1997 - Daniel Tkaczuk - # 6
1998 - Rico Fata - #6
2000 - Brent Krahn - # 9
2002 - Eric Nystrom - #10
2003 - Dion Phaneuf - # 9
2013 - Sean Monahan - # 6
2014 - Sam Bennett - # 4
2016 - Matthew Tkachuk - # 6

That's 5 of the 9 Top 10 picks at # 6.

I'm somewhat amazed that with some of the truly poor teams we've had, that the Flames have never picked in the Top 3.

Edmonton we are definitely not.

Tkaczuk - was a decent pick at the time but ran into concussion problems.
Fata - yeah poor pick who never really advanced his game.
Krahn - gambled with Hitmen goalie in the first round, poor decision
Nystrom - at first glance looks like a poor pick but look at his draft class, not a lot there after the tenth pick and he has managed to play 593 games.

The best of that bad bunch would be Nystrom.

Just in the first round, there were 8 players drafted after him that scored more than his 123 career points.

Alexander Semin - 517
Alexander Steen - 481
Chris Higgins - 333
Sean Bergenheim - 180
Keith Ballard - 175
Daniel Paille - 172
Boyd Gordon - 160
Jim Slater - 138

In the 2nd Round, our pick Brian McConnell never even played a NHL game.

Duncan Keith - 488
Jiri Hudler - 417
Jarret Stoll - 388
Matthew Stajan - 378
Thomas Fleischmann - 335
Trevor Daley - 259
Johnny Boychuk - 135

Other than that period, that's a really strong draft record. And even then, at least few of those bad picks still played in the NHL

Yeah but that period accounts for half of the listed picks.

Our history for top 10 picks is bad, but you have to remember that we never picked top 5 (other than Bennett). We haven't ever crapped the bed, unlike the other Canadian teams.

But the Atlanta Flames picked in top ten twice. Jacques Richard and Tom Lysiak were both taken second overall. They were pretty good picks.

But when the other half include guys like Monahan, Bennett, Phaneuf, Stillman, Tkachuk, I think it makes the overall list pretty strong.

So many top 10 picks never amount to anything.

2000 17OA Alexei Mikhnov 2GP 0 0 0
2002 15OA Jesse Niinimaki 0GP 0 0 0

One point between them. Edmonton is no good.

Not just the Flames blew drafting in that era. '97, '99, 2000, 2002 were all pretty bad drafts. The depth in the draft lately is crazy good compared to those years.

I guess all the talent from those years was saved up for the 2003 draft. What a draft that was.
