Icon56 Jets sign Hobey Baker Award finalist Kyle Connor to a $1.775 AAV contract

"The Winnipeg Jets have signed forward Kyle Connor to a three-year, two-way entry-level contract with an average annual value of US$1.775 million. The 19-year-old Connor had an NCAA-leading 71 points (35 goals, 36 assists) in 38 games last season as a freshman at the University of Michigan.

Connor finished the season on a 27-game point streak leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten Championship. The native of Shelby Township, Mich., was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award awarded to the top U.S. college player of the season."

Why couldn't they just sign him at an ELC worth 925K?

It's just ELC + Bonuses. Johnny is signed to a $1.85 AAV contract. Sammy is signed to a $3.225 AAV contract. Jankowski is signed to a $1.5 AAV contract.

I think that must include potential bonuses.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but I think that AAV might be due to signing bonuses and performance related stuff. Thought I'd put it out there since nobody else has.

I wish I knew who the Flames were planning to take last year with the 15th pick...in retrospect, Conner looks like he will be a surefire top 6er.

The Jets have some great young pieces

All these things lead me to speculate that if we don't make the Dougie trade, we draft Kyle Connor:

-Tod's brother Craig ranking him way up at #6
-Treliving said they discovered Ryan Lomberg from "all the times" they went to go watch Kyle Connor at Youngstown.
-Connor put up almost identical stats in the USHL to Gaudreau. I think our team's scouting of the USHL is proven from the Gaudreau pick.
-"Someone" was on the phone with Winnipeg's GM right before the Jets made their pick, I remember watching and whoever was talking to Cheveldayoff seemed to be extremely aggressive in trying to get that 17th overall and Chevy just laughed and shook his head about it. After the draft when talking about it, Brad or Conroy revealed that after they traded 15th away, they tried really hard to "get back into the first round".

Interesting that Craig Button had Connor at #6 on his final rankings last year.
He had Boeser at #9.
Both kids had monster freshman years.

Not sure about his dmen rankings (Hanifin at 12?) but he does seem to have an eye for forwards

Kyle Connor is going to be fantastic, wanted him bad leading up to the 2015 draft. The only hesitation I had about trading last years first was if he was still available at our pick. Couldn't believe Boston skipped over him (and Barzel) three times.

Another fun poll for y'all. Knowing what we know now, would anybody undo the Dougie trade and draft this guy?

We could have Connor, Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson (or Daniel Sprong, drafted two spots later) at #45 and Jeremy Lauzon at #52. (Though we probably would have drafted Andersson and Kylington at 52 and 53 and then kept our two 3rd rounders.)

Nope.

Wouldn't trade Hamilton straight up for him, wouldn't undo that trade. Kyle Connor is going to be a stud but Hamilton already is, and hasn't hit his 23rd birthday yet.

With Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett already in the fold at the time and Brodie being the only young piece on the blueline Hamilton was and is a great acquisition.

Very happy with this signing. Connor will likely win the Hobey Baker; he's had an incredible season. Oozing offensive talent and skill. Something to look forward to next year for sure after a very forgettable 2015-16.

Undecided. It really depends on how Dougie develops all-around.
