I wonder if they will groom him to take over for Sutter after next season if Sutter decides to go back into retirement.

Ahead of Muller and Huska? I doubt it.

Amazing accomplishment. How often does a rookie AHL head coach win Coach of the year?

It’d be interesting to know how much value is placed on the development vs the winning part of coaching in the award. If he develops players as well as he has the team winning, the future is bright.

It's primarily prospects driving the Heat's success. The AHL journeymen on the team are more or less in supporting roles.

At the rate we are graduating our AHL coaches who are now learning from one of the best to coach, play and GM in the league ....I'm glad they are great students of the game.
Sutter is a master in so many ways and finding the people they have in the organization is so awesome.
The trickle down effect from Sutter is going to pay huge in the future when Darryl steps aside.

Love conquers all?

One would assume that he will interview for an NHL position somewhere for next season.

AHL Awards are nice and all.... but a glance at past winners is a mixed bag.

2011–12 Jon Cooper - Norfolk Admirals
2012–13 Willie Desjardins - Texas Stars
2013–14 Jeff Blashill - Grand Rapids Griffins
2014–15 Mike Stothers - Manchester Monarchs
2015–16 Rick Kowalsky - Albany Devils
2016–17 Roy Sommer - San Jose Barracuda
2017–18 Pascal Vincent - Manitoba Moose
2018–19 Mike Vellucci - Charlotte Checkers
2019–20 Karl Taylor - Milwaukee Admirals
2020–21 Spencer Carbery - Hershey Bears

Nice accolade though.

I wonder how many times an organization has won both the AHL and NHL coach of the year awards in the same season?
