Good to know. I've been pulling the .fit files from my devices manually and uploading them to Strava; a bit of a pain.

my garmin and strava data is also up again. although the garmin app still shows a server maintenance issue.

wonder what garmin had to do to fix this? as i don't think companies pay ransom, do they?

The people complaining about Garmin being down are hilarious. There are people not running because they can't immediately look at Garmin Connect. The run and rides are still recorded. You just have to manually update it to Strava. It takes under 10 seconds. For those of us cyclists that had the Garmin 500, this is how we did every ride we wanted to see. Others are complaining because Garmin is not responding to every angry email and tweet, failing to see that if they are responding to the general public, they are taking away resources from fixing the actual problem. There are people saying Garmin should have immediately paid the $10MM ransom and others saying Garmin should pay $250MM to settle civil suits with people for the inconvenience.

All it's missing is a catchy name, like Garmin-Gate, or the Garpocolypse. GOVID?

I doubt the social media and customer service staff are working on restoring backups.

It sucks for the Garmin team out in Cochrane. They're a good local tech story.

They probably are not. They will be required to go ask the guys fixing the problem. My guess is the people fixing the issue would prefer to talk to each other and management to fix the problem as quick as they can, instead of talking to the twitter staff.

For anyone debating on whether to do the bow valley parkway while the road is closed to vehicles, I would strongly suggest it- so awesome without any traffic. I was expecting a nut show, but was fairly quiet today, with long stretches of not seeing anyone. Parked in Banff thinking there wouldn’t be any parking, but there were spots right at the closure. Doing it on a weekday helped Im sure, but it is also more of an intermediate ride compared to the Legacy Trail, so that probably keeps many away.

That's still not really how it works; SM/CS staff don't actually need to interface with techs in a crisis situation like this.

There is probably an executive/VP in charge or product/tech, and another in charge of sales/marketing/service. The former needed to tell the latter what was going on, then the latter can direct the public messaging accordingly. Or the CEO can direct traffic. One or all three of those people are probably the cause of the public messaging failure.

I just did the closed off area, but started at the rec centre in Banff, so just over 60k. Was more than enough with my pace (28k) and the temp. Was just over 30c by the end of my ride.

If I was to cycle it again this summer, I would possibly park right at the start of the parkway and do the closed off portion twice, as opposed to biking to Louise and back- the second half of which is still open to traffic.

Last year we took the bus to Lake Louise with our bikes from Canmore, then biked all the way back. It worked quite well. The Lake Louise to Castle section isn't all that busy.

Which bus would that be? Might be a better option than convincing my wife to drop me off at Lake Louise and then wait for me in Banff.

I'm not sure if it is running now with COVID, but we took the ROAM to Banff, then transferred to the Lake Louise bus. I think it was $12 total.

Any idea how long this will be closed for? I want to do this ride but can't get away from work for a mid week ride for a couple of weeks.

I’ve heard it’s all summer.
