Actor Robin Williams found dead in apparent suicide

Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, issued the following statement: "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

I know he was back on the sauce (and then on to rehab) a while back after a long period away from it.

People will do whatever they can to mask their demons, be it alcohol, drugs, etc. It's because of the negitive stigma associated with mental illness that causes people to do this.

I just wish we could elminate the stigma and make people understand that mental illness is not a weakness and that there is no shame in seeking help.

Yeah, it does seem like the people who that are always on or have to be the center of attention are often the ones who are going through personal issues. Robin Williams definitely gave that vibe that he was always looking for acceptance and love, which it sounds like he didn't really get much of early on in life. It's crazy how much a crappy childhood can mess with you for the rest of your life.

Love those movies. He was great in "World's Greatest Dad" which was probably his darkest role.

this Robin Williams story always made me smile:

While studying at Juilliard, Williams befriended Christopher Reeve. They had several classes together in which they were the only students, and they remained good friends for the rest of Reeve's life. Williams visited Reeve after the horse riding accident that rendered him a quadriplegic, and cheered him up by pretending to be an eccentric Russian doctor (similar to his role in Nine Months). Williams claimed that he was there to perform a colonoscopy. Reeve stated that he laughed for the first time since the accident and knew that life was going to be okay.[23]

It seems that all great comedians are born out of sadness of some sort. It's just so terrible that comedy and depression seem to be different sides of the same coin. I had so much respect for Robin Williams just as a human being. Between his infectious personality and his contributions to Live Aid, he just tried so hard to make everyone else happy whatever way he could.

The role that probably fits him best is Patch Adams. I doubt he was even acting in that role. A very sad man who finds his way through comedy, and in turn finds a way to help others with it.

I remember watching a behind the scenes interview with Chris Farley...I think it was for Tommy Boy...where he talked about his over the top, physical style. If I recall correctly he said something along the lines "People love when fatty falls down", and you could really pick up on the self-loathing when he made that quote. After he passed a few more quotes and stories came out and revealed that he always felt inadequate and completely unhappy with himself.

I know Williams struggled with a lot of those typical personal demons when he started out in the business, and from what I understand the death of Jim Belushi had a huge impact on him in a few ways.

Again, I never even remotely suspected that this kind of sadness was brewing beneath all that laughter. My youth was built on the comedy of Robin Williams. The great roles he had in the 90s and the insanity of his stand-up and improv in the early 2000s.

This is completely out of left field, and it's a far more depressing Monday than I would have expected even given the news of who it was and how it happened. There was some strange sort of purity surrounding Robin Williams for me, and this report hits harder than most.
