Icon34 Preds sign Rinne (2yrs, $5mil AAV)

Robby Stanley @RStanleyNHL
The #Preds have signed Pekka Rinne to a two-year, $10 million contract through the 2020-21 season.

Was Rinne looking for a short term deal?

Wonder what the trade ask for Saros would be.

Good money for one of the top goalies in the league. How long is Saros signed for? I wonder how he feels about Rinne being re-signed.

This changes nothing. Saros will still cost far too much to try and obtain. Nashville has cemented their goaltending for 2 years, which is likely their window to win it all. Saros is going nowhere.

There's no reason not to hold on to him. He is signed for the same amount of time and is still an RFA at the end. He's on a cheap contract and gives them a future in net while being a present day insurance policy. He also will give them 30 or so games a year of quality backup goaltending.

Interesting. If there is an expansion draft in 2020 for Seattle, it would mean the Preds would have to protect Rinne and expose Saros.

Remember that is IF. It is potentially a lockout year. Also possible that Rinne pulls a Fleury and waives his NMC for the expansion draft

Rinne has a modified NTC and NMC in each of the two years of his new contract. Same terms as his current protection: a 10-team trade list.

He's 36, I'm sure he wasn't realistically expecting anything much longer than this.

Wow, that's actually a pretty good deal. I mean sure the guy is 36. But he's the reigning Vezina champion. Have to think he maybe took a bit of a discount for a couple more cracks at a cup run.

Time sure does fly. I remember when he signed his 7x7 contract and remember thinking how great of a goalie he was. Now he's already in the last season and just signed for 2 more.

I wonder if this is an indication that teams are expecting expansion to be pushed back a year? Between a potential for another lockout in 2020 and the tight timeline for the arena construction, a 2021 start date for Seattle probably makes more sense.

Interesting, Im guessing his 10 team no trade list is as below, since most NHLers have similar lists

Edmonton
Ottawa
Calgary
NYI
Buffalo
Winnipeg
Carolina
Columbus possibly

I find it interesting that Rinne has signed a contract on his birthday and got a shutout ... twice now (2011)
