The banners are a mess. Different styles and looks take away from being able to look up and see an impressive series of them all hanging there.
Every time I go to a game I look up and just shake my head that at what a poor overall visual it presents.

Remember how bad it used to be? When they weren’t even organized properly? They half fixed it but now they all rest on a ventilation duct. Drives me crazy.
They need to be completely redone and properly arranged.

The worst was when they put up the Getzlaf banner for the Hitmen and made it the same size as the Flames banners, but hung it beside all the WHL banners, which are much smaller, so the Getzlaf banner dwarfed all the ones beside it.
Thankfully, they finally fixed it last year when they did Ladd's.

Forever a Flame and retirement is the same honour. Worse is to create two tiers. If they retire Iggys Jersey they cement the two tiered system instead of how it’s currently ambiguous.

Are 'Forever A Flame' numbers off the table forever? Because that's what jersey retirement means to me.

They are not. Someone else can still wear the FAF jerseys. It’s stupid. Retire it or don’t. Forever a Flame is an idiotic idea.

Jersey retirement should be much more selective. In my opinion I’d retire 14, and 12 and leave it at that.

I don’t think anyone actually knows that answer. It hasn’t happened. People have assumed their is a difference without any evidence.
That aside, if you are good enough to never have your number worn again you don’t need your Jersey “retired” to make that happen
Edit: actually I’m wrong. You can wear a forever a flame number

Doesn’t change my opinion though that retirements are unnecessary

Nope. Nick Shore wore Nieuwendyk's 25 just last season and Freddie Hamilton the two seasons before that.
2 does seem to be effectively retired though. No one has worn it since Commodore in 03/04

I'd probably throw 34 into the conversation as well.

I imagine there will be an announcement about the Iginla date and the third jerseys prior to the regular season starting.

It would be nice if there was a hint or a leak from an insider. Would like to plan to be at that game before prices skyrocket.

This seems more like something they'd do for a deceased player. I feel like other teams have done this, but I can't recall the specifics.

I don't know why CP won't let me quote this post, but anyways.
I strongly disagree. I really like the FAF idea. It lets the team celebrate guys who were really good, but not good enough to have their numbers retired. This is for guys like Regehr, Peplinski, Mullen, Conroy, Loob, Otto, etc. It allows the team to celebrate their careers and thank them for their contributions to the organization. It also shows how special it is to have your number retired, if that happens to you.
The SF Giants do this in baseball. Their criteria for having a number retired started at being in the HOF, but this was waved for Bonds this year. Other guys like Jeff Kent, Matt Cain, JT Snow, Rob Nen, etc. are given this honour. They get a ceremony and a plaque that is outside the stadium. When you go there you can see the history of the team and remember some of the best players the franchise has had. This is almost the same as FAF. The numbers are still allowed to be worn.
I would have retired #2 for Calgary. I would also retire 12, 14, and 34. I would have put #25 as FAF. I would put some of the others up there that I mentioned above. I like a two tiered system. Having a number retired should be for something remarkable, but there should also be a system for being great.

As long as FAF doesn’t replace jersey retirements and doesn’t mean guys avoid those numbers out of “respect”, I totally agree.

Serious question, if Giordano finishes his career in Calgary does he deserve a jersey retirement? Or would he be more of a 'FaF' kind of player?

Why is it disrespectful for a player to wear a great previous players number? Not sure why it upsets people.
I like that 25 and 2 have been used again.
