They didnt implement it "just because".
It was experimented with first in the minors and international play and was really adopted by the league as a response to the "neutral zone trap/left wing lock" that completely neutered scoring for many years.
It came amid a flurry of other rule changes after the lockout year.
Scoring is way up from that time, and its not hard to see that the trapezoid had at least a part in that increase.
