I am not very convinced the NHL has many legitimate "studies" to draw from. I certainly understand the idea in theory, I just don't know if it really accomplishes anything.

They didnt implement it "just because".

It was experimented with first in the minors and international play and was really adopted by the league as a response to the "neutral zone trap/left wing lock" that completely neutered scoring for many years.

It came amid a flurry of other rule changes after the lockout year.

Scoring is way up from that time, and its not hard to see that the trapezoid had at least a part in that increase.

Keep the trapezoid I don't like the idea of limiting a player to play the puck. but let the goalie play the puck anywhere, if he's in the trapezoid you cant hit him but if he decides to play defence man in the corner he's open for a hit .

They already can skate wherever they want. They just can't play the puck in the corners or anywhere past the center line.
