I think this sets the Leafs back significantly. How will they hire someone in time to know Matthews' extension aspirations? Will Shanahan take the rein? So many questions, but I think the Leafs are making a huge mistake by not doing everything they could within reason to bring him back. They're going to be limited with who they can trade any one of the core four two now because of this delay. Yikes.

Based on what Brad built in Calgary, why would the Leafs think he would be an improvement? He had very little success and after he left, we've heard is how toxic the organization is/was. If that's even true, he hired all the "toxicity" and let it fester.

The leafs have attracted more talent and put a more exciting product on the ice in my opinion. I hate that I had to say that.....

There were rumors of Dubas - Shanahan having a bit of a strife...similar to Treliving - Sutter here. I wonder if this was Dubas decision...or if in the end Shanahan used his indecision to convince the board to allow them to move on.

Maybe we can do a reverse Fletcher - Gilmore. Dubas comes here and we fleece the Leafs for one of their top players and dmen.

And he's done the work. I'd wager CGY would be a walk in the park for him.

All points are moot though as I think the Flames just promote Conroy.
I would be way more excited for Dubas than Conroy. I think this team needs a set of outside eyes. Conroy is not only VERY inside but most likely is good friends with most of the team because he's such a charismatic and friendly guy.

For example, Conroy has known Mikael Backlund for years and it's fair to say, that what we do with Backlund is one of the most important decisions regarding the future of this team.

Dubas to Calgary would be nice.

Treliving to Toronto would also be nice. Mostly because I don't like Toronto.

I wonder if the Leafs were not worried they were going to lose Brandon Pridham to someone else and made this move to promote him. That would not surprise me.

I hope Toronto takes Treveling. He could then ruin another Canadian teams futures with bad signings and trades.

If I was Shanahan or the other decision makers, my decision would have been made the moment he started talking about how hard it was on his family. You have to have your GM and his family all-in for the long haul or it's not going to work. It's also probably the best decision for the Dubas family as maybe they need a bit of a break. As with the Flames, the Leafs incoming GM has a lot of heavy lifting to take on with key player contracts close to expiry.

It’s hard to tell sometimes with Dubas if he’s actually good at his job or if because he’s getting clips on TSN/Sportsnet everyday but I would love to see the Flames take a run at him. Seems to match a lot of Maloney’s wants for a GM.

Dude was having decisions about burnout and spending more time with his young family. I don't think he goes to any team for at least this next year, and probably if anything will take an advisor role with the Leafs or the NHL that gives him more balance.

At the end of the day he's a human, he's not a puppet of merciless hockey fans. And I think he knows that.

He's a human being at the end of the day so no doubt there were some legitimate tough situations, but to a large degree cry me a river. There are average Joes like you and me who work 12 hour days daily and not paid nearly as much. So while I feel for the guy, he can wipe those tears with his cash, not toilet paper the rest of us use. He'll be fine when he easily takes another senior management role.

I’d take Dubas over Conroy… he built a deep contender IMO… it would be a shame to hire someone without interviewing him first. Question is would he want to come to another hockey market? Especially one that’s a bit handcuffed by a few long expensive contracts?

Flames/Leafs swap?

I think it could work out pretty well for both clubs.

What's the summary on Dubas?

Aside from the Leafs playoff fails, how has his trades/contracts/drafting been?

I don't follow the Leafs close enough to really have an opinion on him.

I think Treliving will do very well under a much stronger and patient ownership group and management structure.
