Pens are a different situation. Malkin and Crosby are Pens for life, and for whatever reason they see Letang in the same way. They don't seem to have much else who they can trade. They're going to be Edmonton soon enough. That's going to be a hard roster to get back on the winning path when they're old and haven't drafted particularly well.

Uh wat? their core have choked every season
They are at the cap, older than you think, poor on D, low of draft capital after multiple win now moves
AUSTIN MATTHEWS IS A UFA AFTER NEXT SEASON
how do you improve the Leafs exactly?

Be bold and trade Matthews before his NMC kicks in.

You have pieces to trade and pieces to build off, simple as that. The book can be out on what to do with Matthews. Paying any player $13M+ in the cap world really handcuffs what can be done with the rest of the team. So you can trade him for a haul, or keep him knowing you have a franchise player? Dunno.
You can trade Marner or Nylander for a solid package. Knies looks like a 2nd liner at worst.
The team as is, isn't bad at all. Sure on the surface you can say they've only made the 2nd round, but on paper they're a good team with some flaws that need to be addressed. With the trade capital they have they have the capability to do it.

I wouldn't be surprised. Even if you think you found your guy right away most teams will interview others just for optics that they left no stone unturned. Names like Chiarelli and Bergevin are pretty well the same window dressing the Flames brought in to interview when Conny was probably the guy all along.

Agreed. But further, it seems like some are more extreme then others and it's probably to gauge from Shanahan's POV what some conservative GMs would do vs. what some more aggressive GMs would do. Bergevin in an odd way is valuable on the aggressive side. The question of what to do with Matthews came up with each of these interviews. While it's the GM decision sure Shanahan has to go to the board with major changes, and if even 1 of those potential GMs interviewed said he'd deal Matthews, it does get Shanahan's mind going to the different views other "smart" people have on how to achieve success. I'm sure he's noting all these ideas for his own at different points depending on how the season goes.

With Treliving at the healm? Good luck with that. Man I hope Treliving gets the job there, just so the Leafs never challenge for anything in the next decade.

Treliving did a lot of things well. Drafting and a good subset of trades comes to mind. Where he messed up a bunch of times were his terrible outlier FA signings and wanting to get every flavour of the month on the trade market. The second someone became popular (ie: Hamonic), he seemed to want in and pay a high price to get there. So with him at the helm in Toronto, for them I'd worry that he'd try to solve deficiencies on the FA market, which, honestly Toronto has done a great job of avoiding. In a cap world you can't make those mistakes with long term deals. Dubas realized there were core players that were worth the right contract (dollar and term), and there were supplemental pieces that on the open market could get more, but were worth letting go simply because of flexibility required in the cap world.

I wouldn't be surprised if Treliving was eyeing Toronto going back as far as last spring when people started to take note that both he and Dubas were on deals that expired around the same time. I wouldn't be shocked if Treliving quietly put the idea out there that he would be interested should they not re-sign Dubas.

Not sure its breaking news for a new thread but Dubas will stay on as GM for the Penguins.
I wonder if he really wanted to give up the GM duties but didn't want someone like Shanahan hovering above him.
Now lets get that Hanifin deal done.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Wasn't he already POHO and just gave himself GM now?
Makes sense, as I'd read (and agree) it would seem somewhat hypocritical to put himself in a position lording over a GM the way Shanahan did to him.
