Default Any northern lights tonight?

Online tools to monitor northern light activity around Calgary:

K-index from the NOAA
- http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/rt_plots/kp_3d.html
- the index usually needs to be 7ish or higher for a chance of seeing the lights as far south as Calgary.

Spaceweather for the Southern Prairies
- http://www.spaceweather.gc.ca/sr-1-e...uthernprairies
- issues geomagnetic storm watches and forecasts

Aurora Watch Alberta
- http://corona-gw.phys.ualberta.ca/AuroraWatch/
- free email alert service to let you know if there's a decent chance of seeing the northern lights in Calgary

Twitter search
- https://twitter.com/#!/search/realti...within%3A100km
- a real-time way of checking to see if there's any northern lights reported in the sky by anyone within 100km of the Calgary area

Yup - just watched them for about 10 minutes up in Coventry Hills. Quite bright green at one point. Seems to have faded away now. Actually quite amazing.

Spaceweather.com has some crazy pictures from across Canada. This one was taken on Sept. 3rd in Fort Nelson, B.C. by Steve Milner. There are a bunch of them from a magnetic storm in august as well.

Nothing up by Chinook. =/ Bit of a shame. Been a while since I last saw the Northern Lights.

Tonight may have been the most amazing display I've ever seen and I'm in my 50s.

In Copperfield the best show was to the east. Could also be due to light polution to the north of me.

Just came in from seeing the best show I've ever seen in Calgary.

I saw them around Patterson at 10:50 for about 25 minutes. Should have stayed up and watched for them all night. First time I have seen them in Calgary in about 3 years, and the first time I have seen them with colour in awhile.

Saw some decent bursts of them at Molly Malones patio last night. They lasted for about 10-15 and there were some points where it was pretty green.

Got tweets last night from calgary talking about this, in saskatoon there wasn't anything, but I was determined and drove out of the city to where you can really see the sky, and the northern lights were weakly on display out in Sask, nothing close to what it was like in Alberta. Still, it was night being out under the stars for a few minutes.

Seems to be some higher Geomagnetic activity happening again today.

http://www.spaceweather.gc.ca/sr-1-e...uthernprairies

^^ Good page trying to forecast the likelihood of northern lights in southern Alberta.

Seems like when it gets to level 6 or 7 on clear nights we have a good chance of seeing northern lights in Calgary.

Hopefully there will be more chances to see them in Calgary over the next year or so with the solar sunspots approaching the peak of their 11 year cycle.

Anything tonight? The K index is nearly off the chart...

http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/rt_plots/kp_3d.html

Don't think I've ever seen it hit 8.

Space Weather Canada hasn't issued a storm watch though...

Well, if I didn't work a 13 hour shift today, I might have been more inclined to drive around a bit. Instead, I found a dark corner of Copperfield and some new showhomes. Sorry it isn't much of a composed photo.. i was using my car roof and my wallet as my tripod. lol.

This is looking NE.
