Default Excitement around the city

I was downtown and drove around the city and there is little excitement around the city. Not many people are wearing any jerseys(I saw like 5 people wearing jerseys, no car flags(I saw like 10 cars with flags), no one is really talking about the future playoffs. Why is this?

Because there are still games to be played before playoffs starts.

I sense apprehension this year. This isn't happy-go-lucky like 2015.

1) We expected to be here
2) Could face off against CHI or ANA; ####ty deal
3) Oilers might actually be good

I'm actually more irritated than excited. This league is bull####; everything is conspiring against us.

A) playoffs need to start first
B) there needs to be some success for people to start paying attention

When their winning streak got to ten suddenly people were chatting Flames online and casual/non fans were reacting to my Flames-related posts.

The fairweather crowd will come out if the playoffs start off well for them.

I don't get why you are irritated GullFoss.

1.) In November, the team looked like it was heading for a top draft.
2.) Who cares, this is like giving up before the fight even begins.
3.) A blind squirrel, will find a nut, nothing even we can do there.

Why would people downtown be wearing jerseys on a non game day a week before the start of the playoffs?

This was your only method of evaluating the city's excitement? On a Monday afternoon from inside your car while you drove around?

City is much bigger than it was in 2004 as well, and a lot of people that came here probably didn't care for the Flames or hockey for that matter, and the team probably didn't turn a lot of heads / gain many fans in that time period.

I will say I'm surprised at how few car flags I've seen around town though. At one time that was a huge thing.

I think if it is Calgary and Edmonton, it will get people hyped up and both franchise's can really use that.

I'm stoked for playoffs. Got my car flags up, but kinda pointless to walk around in my jersey on a non-game day during the regular season.

This city will be buzzing as soon as playoffs begin. It always is, and it's always fun. I actually think the Flames are the best candidate to be a dark horse this year. If it weren't for loser points they'd be leading the division. They're better than your average Wild Card team in my opinion. I can't wait to get going!

if they have any success in playoffs the excitement will return, but unless it's a deep run I predict it'll be a bit more subdued than usual. Don't get me wrong, people will still be going crazy, just not like 2004. I tack it up to a couple things, not in any particular order:

1) the 04 run was 7 years of playoff drought, this one is 1 year. That kind of drought brings the rain. Watch Edmonton this year, they'll be going bananas.

2) the city is still reeling a bit as a result of the downturn. People have less disposable income to burn, run around, drink and party with. People have serious problems they need to focus on, like feeding their family or paying their mortgage. And if they haven't lost their jobs, the stress level on people has risen significantly which impacts the "care-free" nature of people during times like these.

3) the building drama. I think most Calgarians sort of roll their eyes about the whole thing. A billionaire wants a handout, sweet. It has gone over like a lead balloon for most people.

I see car flags everywhere...my car included. Playoffs start next week.

Please, stop making threads. Try contributing in one for a change.

Sometimes that works the opposite way, people getting excited because they want to be distracted by something positive.
