I saw Fletch 2 at Esso Plaza. Man, those were crappy little theatres. I also remember seeing Cape Fear at the Bankers Hall Famous Players Theatre. They had one theatre (Theatre #1) with a really large screen but the other four theatres were small and crappy. The theatre I miss the most is the North Hill theatre. They had the biggest screen in Calgary and it was capable of projecting 65/70 mm films. I still remember watching Fargo at North Hill.
I remember watching the Wrath of Khan at the Palace. And the current Met Centre on 4th Ave used to be the Calgary Place movie theatre, with two screens. I remember seeing Superman (the first one with Christopher Reeve) there.

I still remember being in an absolute brawl outside of Rock City, I had to call my Dad to come and bail me out after that one, talk about awkward conversations on the way home. Not about being at a peeler club and being underaged, my old man probably at a deep down level completely respected that. But he wanted to know how I did in the fight since I was a mess.
|
Was it in the back of the Majestic Inn or just down the street? I worked as a bell hop there in about '83. There was a peeler bar by day and biker bar/live bands at night. There was a small gay bar hidden on the corner of the back parking lot. I think the main bar was called The Magic Stick.
Delivered a lot of room service up to the strippers rooms. I was a shy, skinny 18 yr old, it was an eye opener for sure. Lots of bikers hung out there, Kings Crew and Grim Reapers if I remember correctly. Cops came in mass to more than a few brawls in the parking lot.

I've been sitting on some really cool photos for a while now and am going to share some. My grandfather was born towards the end of WW1 and was an avid photographer his entire life. He has documented the changing face of Calgary from what I believe is during the 1950s, until his death 5 years ago. After he died, my uncle was able to get thousands upon thousands of slides converted into digital format that I have saved onto my PC. Every once in a while, I'll go through these photos and reminisce on not only what life was like for my Dad and his family growing up, but how Calgary itself has changed through time.
Here is the Calgary Tower being built during the late 60s.

The rink was on the roof, outdoors on the east side. I remember skating there too.

Me too. I love old photographs of a place you know.
This is one of my favourites. Anyone in / from the South should be able to figure this one out.
I'd love to get an original print of this framed.

Definitely Devonian Gardens. It used to be such a nice little sanctuary downtown. They really did ruin it.

Good old Macleod Trail. Back when it was literally a trail that went to Fort Macleod.

Downtown Calgary used to be a fun place for 15 year olds to go in a Saturday afternoon. Now it's a fun place for 30 year olds to go on a Friday night.

When I was growing up there was a used book store on 8th avenue where one could buy used comics, books, sheet music, and instruments. You could also sell your text books from HS there. Place was called Jaffe's Book and Music Exchange. Spent many a Saturday afternoon looking for old comics and magazines.

My dad took me and my buddies to the strippers on my 18th birthday. Peepers South.

The one church on the right is still standing, just north of Totem.
And it still literally goes to Ft. Macleod.
