Icon31 LA Kings could be up for sale

http://nypost.com/2014/06/04/la-king...-sale-of-team/

Quote:
Philip Anschutz’s AEG is weighing putting its LA Kings hockey franchise on the block soon after the Stanley Cup Finals, The Post has learned.

“I can assure you there will be a de-coupling of [AEG’s] content from real estate,” one well-placed banker said.

A sports banker said the NHL’s Western Conference champ, which is battling the hometown Rangers for ice hockey supremacy, has been essentially for sale for the past five years for anyone having interest in buying the money-losing team.

Morgan Stanley is readying potential suitors, a third banking source said. The bank declined to comment.

AEG, which owns or operates dozens of arenas, stadiums and convention centers around the world, in addition to the Kings and the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo soccer teams, denies it will try to sell the Kings or its sports teams.

“AEG has no interest in auctioning any of its sports teams currently or at any time in the near future,” Ted Fikre, AEG’s chief legal officer, told The Post.

probably the best time to sell, I don't think the teams value could have been this high, even when they had Gretzky (I was really young then, so maybe).

I think they tried to sell them after they won the cup in 2012 but nothing came of it.

Gotta think that seeing the Clippers just being sold for $2B helps

If the Clippers are worth $2B then the Kings gotta be worth half that.

I would expect a company like AEG to be prudent in trying to gauge the market value of their assets given the amount of money the Clippers were sold for. If someone wants to pay a billion then this is probably the most opportune time to sell.

I think they'd be thrilled with a quarter.

these are the kind of stories you wouldn't want leaked while the cup is still being played for.... Hope it doesn't cause any kind of distraction

This story has been around for years, it just seems to bubble up now and then. I highly doubt at this point it's a distraction to anybody.

And I don't see how it would be a distraction even if it was true. This isn't Phoenix where no one wants to buy the team and they're bleeding money and acting as an anchor on the league. It's the LA Kings, recent champs at the pinnacle of their support. They'd find a buyer and it would be life as usual.

I'm sure Sterling would be thrilled to get back into the sports industry in a much more white-based sport...

They are one step removed from the Enquirer, I would not trust anything written in that garbage.

The Clippers are likely to sign a local TV deal in the $1.25-1.5 billion range. I'd be surpised if the Kings can even get 20% of that. That's why the Clippers are worth $2 billion. Kings probably get around $500 million.

Interesting timing. Rangers in the final and the post stirring up controversy about the opponent.

This is exhibit A of why Americans are crazy. The Clippers have been the laughing stock of Sport for 30 yrs, not the NBA, all of sports, this recent run of success is really just the cherry on top of a massive turd. Add in the fact that the Clippers are the red headed step child to the Lakers in that town and they are worth $2 billion, when the Kings have one of the best marketing departments in the NHL (your welcome Canada!) and have had a quality on ice product for most of the last 20 years and they are worth mayby $500 million?

What puzzles me more is that you look at the crowds at the game and they are completely into game, as rabid as any Canadian crowd. So it seems that if you can get Americans to watch the games they love it but for the most part they would rather watch a dumpster fire like the Clippers
