I’m with Calf minus the manliness thing. But I think he means that it’s a way for men to say they like Christmas movies (which are usually sappy rom coms) but really they like Die Hard.

Nevertheless, it’s not a Christmas movie. Lethal Weapon is also not a Christmas movie.

Finally, you're talking to a guy that has artificial grass in his backyard. Pretend nature is the best nature. I like things looking and being perfect. Lake Bonavista is basically perfect. I also love that it is exclusionary. Why would I want riff-raff at my lake? And yeah, the mansions that surround the lakes are something else. I live in a normal bungalow a couple blocks away, though. No mansion for this guy.
The Nose Hill part was just trolling you but I do think lake communities are a blight compared to real public space.

I am glad the Xmas lights on the old Telus building are gone. They were ugly.

Somewhere within the past 5 years, we went from simple modest Christmas lights to gaudy, eye-abusing, strobe-light flashing, "my lights are better and brighter than yours!!" - Christmas lights. And I don't like it.

Does that make me a Grinch?

Who doesn't like a lake? Your take is bizarre. People travel from cities all over the world to random lakes for vacations all the time. For whatever reason, sitting in sand on a beach while kids splash around is really relaxing. Doing so while slurping on a slurpee, eating a bag of chips and a handful of of five-cent candies is pretty much the best. Lake community people do that after work on a Wednesday. Sometimes we'll grab a boat and paddle over to the island and have a sandwich for supper. Last winter we ice fished on the lake in the winter. Sometimes my son and I will throw sticks in the water at the top of the waterfall and watch them as they try to make their way down the hill and into the lake. No barking dogs or dog crap, only a limited amount of people (residents) are allowed in so it's never too busy...I mean, it doesn't get better than that.

Missed out on the 2 most important things:

Access to downtown: Brutal
Exit Calgary heading west: Brutal

For Me on the west side:

New Hospital: Meh
New theatre: Who cares
Pubs and restaurants: check
Grocery stores: check
New YMCA: Who cares
New Library: Not new but don't need new.

Let’s unpack access to mountains first, the soon to be complete ring road will allow me the ability to bypass you non-lake dwelling riff raff and still be in the mountains.

Like who the hell wants to go downtown anyway?

Work: nope
Shopping: yeah nah is there even a grocery store in the core anymore
Restaurants or bars: yeah nah I gotta pay more to get home then go back and get my car.

Man I feel sorry for you.

Do you think you could sue your realtor for convincing you to move to such a blah part of Calgary?

I love that new theater. It's such a great spot for a date night and the food is reasonably good for what you'd expect. I like the cauliflower wings for a little snack on the fancy side of the theater (like, the lounge area).

I do find it funny how much people drink there, too. A dude beside me downed an entire pitcher of beer during Ford vs. Ferrari. IDK, maybe that's normal for some of you, but it seemed kinda weird to me.

Also, there is that MEC in the plaza, which is also cool.

It's just the best side of town. And then you go to the NW and people will be bragging about Edgemont or wherever, and you're like, this is a fataing dump and there's nothing to do and nowhere to eat around here. WTF.

I guess a couple from me:

Cheese (other than mozzarella on pizza and cheddar on nachos) is fricking disgusting, especially Parmesan and feta. Makes me gag just to even smell it.

Pineapple on pizza is heavenly.

Oh yeah MEC.

I forgot.

While the rest of you fight traffic to go to MEC, I stroll over then have a beer after.

An embarrassment of riches

Libraries are dumb. We don't need them. I have more information and access to books on my phone than any library had growing up. Fata libraries.

Exiting west isn't the best, I can't argue with that. UCB is correct that it will be just fine within a couple of years, but right now the NW has that and only that. It's not saying much, though, when the best part of your quadrant is you can escape it quickly.

I sort of feel sorry they've been duped. We've ascended to greatness and they're just playing in the mud.

Even when traffic isn't bad I go through Bragg Creek, way nicer drive and the time difference is negligible

My hot take: all of modern atheism is half-cribbed stuff from Stoic philosophers or de-Christianized ethics. Very few atheists recognize the Nietzschean satire that they live on a daily basis as a virtually pointless member of the bourgeoisie.

Like on the 22x? That's not bad and it's a nice drive.

The worst way out of town has to be taking Glenmore. Is that highway 8? It's so painfully slow. You feel like you're out of town and should be doing 110, but you have to pass all those embarrassing mini mansions and you're doing like 60 for way too long.

Speaking of huge houses along highways? lol, what is with people buying those? If you want to live in the country, at least wiggle down a few side roads and over a hill so you don't just see and hear a steady stream of cars from the day you move in until the day you die. And if you have your heart set on building a 4000sf house 300 meters from a major highway, IDK, maybe plant some fataing trees like right now.

When I had my old Mustang with the super loud exhaust and x-pipe, I would always down shift and stomp on it as I drove by huge houses close to the highway just to show them my disapproval. I know that's lame and stupid, but I want to amplify their regret.

Most of us don't know what any of that means, or give a crap. We just go on living our lives and not wasting Sundays, or getting stressed about how miserable our afterlife is going to be. Life is a lot happier when you aren't stressing about pleasing the un-pleasable, and maximizing the one life you have.
