Does it?
I'm not a Rinaldo fan but Ryan-Gawdin seems like a good start to a fourth line to me.

If we could get Soderberg in for 800k a bottom 6 of:
Dube-Bennett-Soderberg
Lucic-Ryan-Gawdin
Seems pretty solid.

I wonder if Hamonic would come back on a cheap deal? Teams don't seem to be banging down his door.

I can't emphasize this enough, we really really do not need hammer back. Look elsewhere.

Scorpion, you may have been right about Soderberg.

Soderberg is a left hand shot.

If Hamonic wants to take league min one year contract for a #6 role and work his way back up then sure.
If that's an insulting offer to him then he's welcome to wait for another suitor.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hamonic sat the year out. He skipped the playoffs because of covid, and now he's gonna come back despite higher risk with the teams not being in a bubble this time? I don't see it.

Gaudreau for ekblad gets us a young core player to continue this era of flames around.
I'm personally not of the opinion that 30 year old Tanev is an immediate core member the team is building around. I could see him on any of the 3 pairs to be honest (ie. could see him filling in on Brodie's spot with Giordano, OR having giordano/andersson as the top pair and pairing Hanifin with tanner, OR using tanev as he was used in Vancouver which is as a partner to a young dman, in this case playing with Valimaki).
Given the league's shortage of quality RHD, using Gaudreau to get a possible #1 RHD, and suddenly being RHD-heavy is a situation I'd be more than happy to see the flames be in. Every year, there's more than enough team's in the hunt for RHD.

That was when December 1 was the target return date. They won't have a 7 week long training camp.
We're about 2 months away from the start of camp if they're aiming for a January 1 return. I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar to what the WHL is doing, with camp opening after Christmas and a return in the second week of January.

Adding Soderberg would be fantastic and gives the team a ton of flexibility. Hard to pencil in Gawdin as a good 4th liner at this point, still yet to play a single NHL game.

There are many many forwards on the market who would likely take 700-800k and be orders of magnitude more effective than Rinaldo.
Otherwise, having Ryan and Gawdin down there sounds terrific

Is Ekblad that good? I honestly haven't heard a lot of noise around the guy since his rookie year.
One of those cases where I'm trying to understand the fixation with that specific player.

I think Melker Karlsson could be a target for a PK specialist. He can play all 3 forward positions and is a RHS to boot.

The sample size is getting larger. So we can continue to wait for his rebound to happen - but we should also ask what if it doesn't.
Sure you can look back at his production since he came into the league, but his production has tailed off for an extended period of time, and those stats match the eye test.
Yes I think he's peaked. Which frankly isn't unusual. A lot of players peak before his current age. Or they don't continue to progress.
Nothing wrong with admitting that and then evaluating what you do then short-term and long-term.
|
He had a rough 2019 calendar year, there’s no doubt about that, but rebounded quite nicely at the start of 2020. Check the statistics yourself where he was a ppg player once lines stabilized. The eye test matched for me as I thought he was getting closer to form.
Maybe he’s not a 99 point Hart Trophy contender every year like he was in 18-19, but a durable 80 point game breaker who can run a powerplay is more than enough value for his current contract. Honestly, he’s closer to a $10M player than $6.75M and as I demonstrated, he’s one of the top producing even strength players in the game today, so how will this team replace that?
The Flames finished 20th in scoring this season and a big part of that was due in part to Gaudreau’s struggles. Yet in 18-19, the Flames finished 2nd in league scoring which surprise, surprise, happened to coincide with his career year. Basically since his arrival, this team has been very reliant on what he brings to the table and the percentage of his team’s overall goals shows that.
Johnny Gaudreau is not the Calgary Flames’ biggest problem. He’s actually a solution. Minus his current cap hit, this team has $75M in cap space, is the rest of that $75M pulling their weight? That’s a good question. Canadian fanbases are way too hard on their star players and yet people still wonder why Canadian cities end up on so many No Trade lists.

After many years of not having enough RHS forwards in the lineup it would be a hell of a sight to see three on the same line.
Karlsson - Ryan - Gawdin would probably be a good line for sure.
