All Flames after the first 10 minutes against a depleted Jets team without Schiefele and later Laine. Actually thought they started out well — Tkachuk set the tone early with his physicality and Schiefele definitely heard the footsteps as a result. Even Lindholm and Monahan were throwing the body as well which is great to see. Last year they tried to out-skill Colorado but you know they aren’t going to try that again this year.
Bennett and Lucic combine for 3 minor penalties but otherwise that line brought a ton of energy. They are absolutely going to wear down the Jets if they keep that up.
3R line is so much better than Jankowski/Bennett. Love that Rieder managed to get a shorty — was the GWG as well.
As for the hit, you can see Tkachuk’s skate connect with Schiefele’s lower leg. If it’s an Achilles injury then I’m guessing the Jets will announce it to try and get Tkachuk suspended. If it’s a knee or lower leg injury then it’s just bad luck for the Jets. Either way there was obviously no intent but Maurice is looking to stir the pot to try and help his team.

There is no way the Flames are not coming out with something in response to those comments. Whether it’s Ward or someone else.
I mean it’s a lie quite frankly.

Yeah, you can't suspend a player who loses balance and target because Schieffele tried to quick turn to avoid the hit. If that's intentional, MT has otherworldly murder instincts.
That wasn't intentional and you can't suspend a player for an accident like that.
Come on.

Maurice has basically planted the seed for his players to go after Tkachuk now. What a moron. The Jets players will now spend the majority of game 2 trying to head hunt #19, which just plays into Calgary's hands IMO.

Maurice is probably fired if they loose this series and
Potentially / probably missing 2/3 best players. Why not throw a Hail Mary !

I don't see how Tkachuk could have done that intentionally, especially at game speed. We're talking milliseconds to react here in order for this to be intentional.

Sure, but Maurice accusing players of intentionally trying to end a players career is a bad look for the league, and the League should be on the phone with him telling him to shut his pie hole or take the rest of the series off.
I doubt the league takes more then a 5 second look at it, see's MS do a speed pivot, MT trying to compensate and his upper body goes back and his skate comes up because he's off balance and there's contact.
that's what I saw.
I think that if coaches want to do stuff like that, if the league doesn't suspend the player the coach should be suspended. It was a bush league move by Maurice.

He wont, its not his style. He'll defend his player but in a measured, reasonable way.
I'd love to know how Maurice...albeit with a cooler head...thinks that could have been deliberate.
I've watched it over and over and unless hes seeing something that I'm not then I dont see it.

Maurice and Jets fans are upset because it’s Matthew Tkachuk. That’s it. They aren’t thinking logically or rationally. They’re speaking with pure emotion.
|
In fairness, when asked about it Wheeler refused to comment and said that he hadn't seen it yet. I thought it was a classy move by him. He made him answer for it on the ice assuming it was necessary but didn't talk crap after the game.
Good on him, I thought. That's why he's the captain.
Edit: Sorry, didn't read right. You said Maurice and the fans, not the players.

Who cares what Paul Maurice has to say to the media? If you have a player like Tkachuk on your team, you need to have a thicker skin.
I don’t think we’ll see Flame players too worried about it.

Exactly. Creating the old "us against the world" narrative is an obvious ploy.

They just extended Maurice, he isn’t getting fired.
Maurice’s theatrics tonight is what good coaches do. Darryl did it for us game after game in ‘04, and again in LA.
Tree should really come out and make a mockery of Paul in an interview tomorrow. Call him reckless.

Why does Sportsnet continue to report the narrative that Gio crosscheck hurt Laine on the opposite arm and after it was confirmed it was not by the coach.

I suspect Treliving will have a thing or two to say about it. Although, it's time like this you kind of wish Burke was still in the organization.

Ward should. If he wants to show and or leave his print on this team, this would be the time.
