Because the league had to sucker the Vegas owners into paying $500 million for a team, which they would never have done if they could just buy the Coyotes and move them. Now they've definitely established that nobody else is willing (read: dumb enough) to pay $500 million in expansion fees, relocation is no longer verboten.

I'd expect to see a couple of franchises relocate in the near future.

Meh. It will be completely forgotten by October 17. Stupid election games.

If this is a negotiating ploy by Murray Edwards and Ken King - it is being done in very bad taste. I thought CSEG had more class.

So, the threat to move comes just before the playoffs and he walks away from the table just before the season starts.

Ken King sure has a lot to learn when it comes to getting this city pumped about hockey.

It's called posturing. Looking forward to training camp.

Is there really an untapped market out there that has the same revenue potential for hockey than they already have here on Calgary?? According to this, the flames had the top 10 highest operating income team in the league (data from 2 seasons ago)

Seriously who do these guys think they are? They've put middling product on the ice for the better part of 3 decades now and expect the taxpayers to continue to pay for privilege of it?

Hmmm. A move to Seattle makes it much easier for me to attend Flames games.

I'm thinking this will enable the City to lay out publicly what it actually is willing to do. Buckle up.

Is it a coincidence that this is announced just as the election cycle is starting? My guess that this is an attempt to make the new arena an election issue. Let's see if any of the mayoral candidates/aldermanic candidates proclaim their support for CalgaryNext

I assume this is nothing more than (ill-advised) pre-election posturing.

But if they maintain this stance beyond the election, and if there is a single whisper of a threat to move, I will cancel my seasons tickets and never look back. (Not trying to make it sound like a big threat, just saying)

I want a new arena. And I have no problem with some public funding. But I am not going to support this garbage.

The owners should put the Flames up for sale... there are people from Calgary lining up to invest money in teams in other cities.

Time for owners who are in Calgary for the long haul regardless of an ideal building or not.

Good for Ken King. It's all negotiations but clearly if the other side ie Calgary is not willing to figure this out sometimes it comes to this.

I find Nenshi' s statement yesterday as pretty bogus....all along he has been fairly adamant against the arena.

If so many other cities have figured this out, why can't Calgary?

At the end of the day this is all posturing. Annoying they have to do this so publicly but sometimes I guess it's what is necessary.

Don't make me cheer for the damn Canucks... Even if the team moves to Seattle which is like a 2.5 hour drive for me, I wouldn't ever cheer for them again and would have to resort to smashing my head so many times against a concrete wall to justify brain injury is the reason I cheer for a the damn Canucks.

Ken King should not be part of this organization... at all.

As put forth before, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto all built their arena with private money, why can't the flames?
