Absolutely, but I am listening to the local Vancouver radio now and there is some expectation among fans and media that Horvat can be a +70-point centre.

Definitely overpayment for what Horvat has brought to this point. The Flames got Monahan on more term for just 0.75 mil more, and Monahan is a far better player currently.

Liking that the other western Canadian teams are really opening their wallets for their kids while the Flames are playing hardball and doing it right.

Lol.

Now, Mr. Barzal, Please go ahead and win the rookie of the year (or be a runner-up to Jankowski) so that we can make fun of Edmonton more.

Oilers changed the game, talented RFA's now get $1-2 million more than a year ago.

Good deal for Horvat. I wish he didnt play for the Canucks. He's a likeable player, has great wheels and is a really solid piece to build around.

Sean Monahan was drafted in 2013.
Sean Monahan has 107 goals.
There were 843 players drafted to the NHL from 2010 to 2013, inclusive.
Of those 843 players, 5 have more goals than Sean Monahan. FIVE

2010: Seguin (189); Skinner (180); Hall (152); Tarasenko (145)
2011: Landeskog (118)

That is it.

None of the 632 drafted since (2014-2016 draft) have scored more than him.

So, of the last 1,475 players drafted in the NHL (again, not counting the 2017 draftees), 5 have outscored Sean Monahan. FIVE

Bo Horvat was also drafted in 2013. Sean Monahan has 58 goals more than him, or 123% more.

The kid is good.

Well said.

It's ridiculous this thread was taken off topic by such a tilted and incorrect assertion in the first place.

And while his skating is not great, I think you are drastically overrating Horvat's. He is a good skater, but "elite"? I disagree.
mm, I guess we could argue semantics. yeah, he's a number one center, but a lower-ended one. I guess I could have used the word elite instead of bonafide, but what I meant was skating is a large part of his game which is holding him back from reaching that upper echelon of centers. he can't create his own offense nor is he a play driver. right now he's more of an elite complimentary top line player (as is Draisaitl) rather than that guy that can you can win with him being your best forward

also, about his skating - horvat has the crosby build. not awfully tall, but he's built like an ox. really powerful legs and it allows him to explode very easily. again, arguing semantics if you want to categorize the coglianos/mcdavids/helms/grabners and mackinnons as "elite" he's that notch right below. it's funny because that was one thing that he notably needed to work on coming out of london and he's been able to turn it into an asset. im hoping monahan can follow suit

I think it's a pretty fair deal. He should hit 60 points once or twice over it. I look at his junior production and feel that the player he was last season is pretty close to his ceiling.

I think Love is making some good points about Horvat.

The thing to note about Horvat is that he is blocked on the depth chart by Henrik Sedin.

Last season Horvat and Monahan both scored 40 points at even strength.

They played about the same time at ES, but Monahan had the better linemates which is going to help him a little bit. I don't think its as a big a factor as some think, but its a factor.

Horvat got about a minute less per game on the PP which is where all the difference in production came from. An extra minute of PP time is a big deal.

Horvat plays a lot on the PK as well. I have a soft spot for all discipline players. I feel that they provide more bang for their dollar in the cap world.

It would be interesting to see what Horvat can do if given the opportunity to play the role of number 1 center. If he continues to play like last season he will be great value for his money.

Monahan also consistently faced the best checkers in the league. I doubt Horvat did. When the Canucks and Ducks played I'm betting Kesler played the Sedins, not Horvat's line.

Good signing IMO. Horvat has looked really good visually from the times I've watched him, so it certainly looks like he has the potential to put up better point totals than he has to date. Breaking the 70pt threshold seems plausible if he gets to play with an all-star winger - consider that guys like Conroy and Langkow were able to put up 75+ point seasons with Iginla on their wing. The real question is will he ever get that opportunity.
