Hey all, sorry - just saw the request for a poll for this thread. Hope the choices are good enough, looks fairly close to a consensus of opinions.

Tanev or Backlund for me. I voted Tanev because I think he performs better on the ice, so I used that as a tie breaker.
But you can’t go wrong with either choice.

All of the obvious choices are on expiring or soon to expire contracts. Backlund, Lucic and Monahan. I think that Tanev is happy as he is without the added responsibility. He spends a lot of time teaching the rookies, and is really good at it. Andersson as a dark horse? Hard to hand it to Huberdeau when he is new to the room.

As long as Backlund is on the team its Backlund for me. Entering his 15th season as a Flame and has wore the A forever.
Give Huberdeau Backlunds A and probably name Huberdeau captain after Backlund retires.

Backlund, it's mostly a symbolic title anyways. Huberdeau in 2 years

Backlund definitely part of the leadership group, but I think this is now Huberdeau’s team and given his accolades and leadership qualities I think he deserves the “C” for the next 9 years.

If they don't name a Captain right away I could see a possibility of it being Huberdeau.
I'd like to see Backlund with the C, I honestly think it would make him play even better.

Lindholm would be my choice of the existing players but I am intrigued by Huberdeau knowing he is signed and locked in long term as the current franchise player. I have really liked what he has had to say so far as well. Not sure which way I am going to vote yet

He is new and just coming in. There will be adjustments to the players, a new coach, a new system...he does not need extra responsibilities at this point in time.

Happens from time to time though.
How many times have you seen a rookie come in and be named captain with 0 experience in the NHL at all..
I think his proven leadership on a team that drafted him, his dedication on and off the ice and the fact he's now the face of the franchise for the next 9 years put him a cut above anyone else honestly.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was offered to him as part of him signing to be honest.
He doesn't strike me as a guy whos going to cave under added pressure just because he's new to the team, I think he wants to come in and show everyone he's here to bring this franchise a cup.

I also voted Backlund, mostly due to his work in the community and loyalty. Beyond that, as a fan, there's not a lot to work off of.

I have preferences ranked. For various reasoning.
1. HUBERDEAU
2. TANEV
3. MONAHAN
4. BACKLUND
5. LINDHOLM

I voted Backlund…he seemed to be vocal in the media last year in playoffs. Was arguably their best player vs Edmonton and his give a crap meter was high. I think if they give it to Huberdeau it is a slap in the face of Backlund and Tanev. Give it to one of them, then in 5 years when he is ready to retire transition to Huberdeau or whomever is the next leader (Pelletier maybe).

I would be stunned if Backlund isn't a career Flame. He'll be re-signed after his current deal is up.

Have the Flames had many players that played their entire lengthy careers only with the team? Peplinski comes to mind (all 711 NHL games as a Flame).
Backlund (826 GP) and Monahan (656 GP) are the current candidates to do so.
Loob only played 6 NHL seasons, but they were all with the Flames.
