Can't quote you Text:

I actually wrote you a long response - then I remembered you ridiculed me in the past for long responses. I am going to keep it brief.

Your analogy is flawed at a basic level, not because you attempted to use an analogy. Of course an analogy is useful in illuminating a point or idea, but only when it is a good analogy. Otherwise, it just creates more confusion. Yours had that effect. For starters, the Governor General represents the Monarchy of a foreign nation. Last time I checked, the captain of the Flames does not represent the original owners of the Atlanta Flames. A better analogy would be... the role of the male lion in a pride. I don't know. I didn't think an analogy was necessary here at all as the role of the captain is fairly well understood - it is the impact that we are disagreeing on, no? So no, the analogy that you came up with does not shed any light at all.

I will just skip down to your final point here for brevity. I do not come here for the mockery, the insinuations of stupidity, and so on. I come here for good discussions, and a good discussion is usually to be found with a differing viewpoint, rather than an echo chamber. That's boring. What's worse than boring? Fighting with some random person online that you don't care about and stopped listening to a long time ago because of HOW that person engages. I think it is best that we just agree to disagree here, since you are 100% right and neither one of us finds the other's opinion remotely convincing.

I guarantee you if they named Kevin Rooney captain tomorrow, they would miss the playoffs.

That aside, it’s interesting that both guys who were once thought of as “future captains” in Tkachuk and Monahan get dealt away the same off season.

I would be willing to bet against that guarantee. You think whomever is named Captain is going to make or break this teams season? I don't think so.

Naming Rooney captain would A) never happen, but B) would not cause the Flames to miss the playoffs. Just a bit of an overstatement there.

The most important, captain-specific, on-ice role would be talking to the officials in certain circumstances? I do think having a captain, who is respected by the officials, could maybe give the officials a slightly sunnier disposition towards your team?

My point was just that doing something like that is stupid on its face.

It would cause the entire group to scratch their heads wondering WTF is going on, and that’s not conducive to winning hockey.

Kevin Rooney is not the tone-setter for this group.

I suppose Backlund isn’t either - the tone is set by Darryl. But Backlund would be the logical extension of the coach in the room.

After hearing some interviews with Weegar, I think he could be a dark horse candidate for captain if he gets signed. I don’t see the Flames naming a captain out of camp, maybe halfway through the year.
