Who was the best Goalie of all time?

I spent what is likely far more time then could be thought reasonable gathering every stat I felt noteworthy and cobbled together a spreadsheet of the universally agree upon top 3 of Roy, Brodeur and Hasek. Hopefully the conversation can reach a deeper level now.



My vote is and always has been Patrick Roy. He popularized Butterfly, revolutionizing the position and he has the most cups. Kind of where it starts and ends for me.

Hasek. The career save percentage is just too impressive to ignore. So are the 6 Vezinas.

It’s hard to argue against Roy. Hasek a real tight #2.

If we’re talking pure talent and not accolades, I legitimately think Kipper was one of the best ever. Wasted on crappy old man teams.

My brother and I actually have this discussion often.

I'm still a Hasek guy but when he pushes Roy, it's hard to argue. It's a very clear top 2 at least, that's for sure

Always had the big 4. Hasek, Roy, Brodeur, Belfour.

But Tony Esposito makes it the Great 5.

Brodeur
Roy

Hasek didn’t play as many games as the other two, but the 2 Hart trophies and the save percentage say that he was the most impactful. Brodeur is an easy 2nd for me as he was so good for so long and holds the record for shutouts and wins. Roy is one of the best but he just falls in behind the other two.

I grew up watching Marty and my bias was towards him for a long time. But Hasek was truly a dominant force in net. No other goalie could pull of a lot of the saves he made. Unreal flexibility and determination to keep the puck out of the net

Glenn Hall went 502 consecutive games without a mask (and probably a few broken ribs from all the pre-game puking). That's gotta count for something too.

Considering his regular-season wins record, not to mention his Cup and Olympic rings, it's interesting Brodeur isn't an automatic number 1.

But I agree, it's between Hasek and Roy. Hasek was simply the most spectacular goalie I've ever seen: a guy who baffled players and fans alike with his completely unpredictable pancake-style goaltending.

Roy was pure clutch (minus his silly showboating gaffe in that Avs-Wings series), and even though Brodeur was clutch too, Roy just had that mystique about him, probably because he pretty much singlehandedly won the '86 Cup. And then there were a mere three more to go.

Of course, the guys who played without a mask, let alone oversized equipment, deserve some recognition as well, just for having the stones to play in net.

It’s Hasek and Dryden. Hard to compare eras, but both of them were monsters at the position.

And Brodeur is my favourite hockey player of all time.

Hasek did not even arrive in North America until he was 25-years old. Both Brodeur and Roy had six full years playing NHL hockey by that age, after emerging as Juniour Hockey Stars. It is also hard to ignore Hasek's rather astonishing shutout rate, which happened once in every nine games! I think a strong case can be made that with the same advantage of starting his hockey career in Canada as a teenager, Hasek's accomplishments would have dwarfed those of Roy and Brodeur.

He was utterly sensational, and pretty much singlehandedly made that Buffalo team competitive.

Love both of these guys, but Roy willed two #### Habs teams to the Cup. Colorado doesn't win one without him. Three Conn Smythes. No one else has that. Not Gretzky, not Lemieux.

Sawchuk and Hall , IMO, have to be given consideration. Their athleticism was incredible.
