If the Flames can't find a trade partner for Wideman, should they buy him out?
I don't think he's capable of defending anymore and looks even slower this year. Add to that the distraction with the appeal and taking that in consideration would you be in support of a buy out?
I don't see him as an NHL player any more so I would be in support of a trade where we eat as little salary as possible and get something in return or a buyout.

Uh.. no.
He is off the books in less than a Calendar year. So was raymond for that matter.
Buyouts just extend a smaller cap hit. Those things add up.

I thought the buy out window has already closed for this season.

Summer buy out period has long since passed, this is his final year. Bite the bullet until July 1st, that's it that's all.

He's looked decent in camp. I think you just ride it out and hope he has a bounceback season, which isn't far fetched imo.
Honestly if it wasn't for Hartley spoon feeding him undeserved PP time last year I don't think as many people would have an issue with him

Well then, I'm an idiot.
I guess the question will now be, will anyone take him off our hands?

Nah, I think we;re locked into Wideman in the top 6 this year until the deadline. Even then if the Flames are in a playoff spot his value to the teams overall depth may be greater than the return the Flames will get in trade.

Never trade an NHL caliber defensemen too early in the season, even if you don't need him. Someone will need one eventually (maybe even yourself) so the demand for that type of asset will grow throughout the season.
Reminds me of the Toni Lydman situation right before 2005. We didn't really need him so Sutter traded him to Buffalo for a measly 3rd. Sure enough a month or two in we either sustained some injuries on the blue line and wished we had him or other teams did and we wished we had him to trade (forget which).

If you had a time machine, would you travel back in time and:
A) Kill Hitler as a baby
B) Buyout Wideman during this off-season's buyout window
C) Not sign Wideman as a UFA in the first place
D) Do all of the above and more, it's a time machine

The year he put up 54 points there was this thread as well with people wanting to buy him out at the beginning of that season. He was a big part of that season making it to the playoffs. He was a huge part of Johnny Gaudreaus rookie season success as well.
I won't be surprised at all if we see a really good season from Wideman again this year. He won't be bought out.

Send him to the AHL. Best case, he gets claimed when waived, worst case you get almost a mil of space and he mentors the young D

I think it will be interesting to see how he performs this year under the new coach and system. He's a serviceable D man.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Wideman brings this year. He looks solid so far.
If we give him some pp time, he'll probably get some trade value.

Bad contract that's done after this season. The dude still had 19 points in 51 games in a horrible year. He's serviceable. Ride out the contract.

If Kris Russell can yield a conditional 1st, a defenseman already better than Kris Russell, and a decent forward prospect with size, then I wonder what a little salary retention and Treliving magic can yield

He'll be worth at least a solid second by the deadline (as long as he doesn't get injured).
Points get you paid, in both dollars and assets. And points are what Wideman brings to the table in abundance.
