Thats why you're never going to get any serious offers on that case of 'Previously Enjoyed' condoms.

I had an old mini freezer I recently needed to sell.
Works fine and I wanted a very low price.
Put it on Kijiji first and I didn't get any responses at all, in 4 days.
Put it on Marketplace this morning and had 4 offers within the first 30 minutes.
Not going to bother with Kijiji going forward with the other stuff I want to sell.

This is a FB Marketplace thing, but I've had a number of people responding to my sell ads saying "SMS me at XYZ and I'll buy this right now"
What's the scam here, trying to get my mobile number for identity / SIM theft (2FA) and other nefarious acts?
User profile is completely blank (looks like a burner) so.... yeah....

I didn't realize what thread I was in reading your post, and by the time I hit the second line I assumed the app you meant was Grindr.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ACCEPT!!
Cash or etransfer, and even with etransfer there are scams.
Back to cash.

Bought something off Kijiji this week... had been messaging 2mo back, then had to let it drop. Saw it was still up last week so messaged the person. No reply. but could see it was received and read. ok... gave it a few days... messaged again... read/ignored... repeated couple times. like buddy do you want to sell or not? Hmmm maybe they did sell it (I'm giving the benefit of the doubt)??
Then I messaged through a family members Kijiji account and they responded and subsequently I picked up the item. Hey if it hasn't sold in 2mo maybe you should think of responding to legit queries and offers!!

Yeah I'm not that dumb. I did laugh when he mentioned it was a certified cheque.
I'm wary of etransfers as well. I've accepted them but I use my account that requires a password. Apparently people spoof the autodeposit emails.

If you see the receipt of the e-transfer in your banking app, though, wouldn't that be confirmation that you've received a legit deposit?

If the funds in the source account were not legit though wouldn't the e-transfer get reversed as everything unwound?

Damn - is that possible? I've been assuming all this time that the funds needed to be there in order to be transferred. So, e-transfers are just like cheques?

I'm not totally sure, but if for example a bank account was funded by a fraudulent money order or wire transfer or whatever, and then there was an e-transfer from that account to me.. and then the fraud was discovered and reversed I assume my e-transfer would get clawed back as well?
Seems pretty unlikely for someone trying to scam me out of a sofa but still.

I can see how that reasoning makes sense. Glad I'm not trying to sell anything expensive.

I called ATB and was told that etransfers are as good as cash. The bank will not try to collect the money in the case of fraud. So that's reassuring.

So I get a low ball and politely decline. Then I get this reply.
"It'll be the best offer you are going to get. Remember this is Calgary."
You live here and you think everybody is poor? A ####ty negotiator? Like what do you even mean?!

Lol I had that happen last month selling a truck. Guy got pissy because I turned down his super low ball, told me I'd never sell for more than that.
Got my asking price the next day

Why do you respond to low balls at all. You gain nothing from doing it. I also think it’s like scams just being polite makes you more likely to be a target so they invest in a response.

What's the latest scam with the buyer offering a deposit again? Like they say they're out of country and they'll send $150 as a deposit until they're back?

The one where they send you more than $150 and then ask for you to return the difference, but then it turns out they sent it from an account with NSF so the bank reverses their deposit to you and you’re SOL.
