Default The parents of the Michigan high school shooting suspect are being charged

Quote:
The parents of the 15-year-old charged in this week's deadly shooting at Michigan's Oxford High School have been charged with four counts each of homicide involuntary manslaughter.

The charges against James and Jennifer Crumbley were filed Friday morning in 52nd District Court in Rochester Hills.

Prosecutors will try to show that sophomore Ethan Crumbley's parents were criminally negligent and contributed to or caused a dangerous situation, said CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig.

It is rare for parents to be charged like this -- and possibly unprecedented, he said.

"What the prosecutor is saying is, let's look at the parents' responsibility," Honig said. "This is really a new frontier."

Freaking awesome- I hope it sets a precedent-

From CNN
After the Michigan shooting suspect, Ethan Crumbley, posted about his gun on social media, his mother, Jennifer Crumbley also created a social media post, saying her son was "testing out his new Christmas present," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald said Friday as she announced the charges that her office is bringing against his parents.

When a teacher reported that Ethan Crumbley was found searching for ammunition on his phone during class on Nov. 21, his mother was contacted by school officials.

"Jennifer Crumbley was contacted via voicemail by school personnel regarding the son's inappropriate internet search. School personnel indicate they followed that voicemail up with an e-mail but received no response from either parent," McDonald said.

"Thereafter, Jennifer Crumbley exchanged text messages about the incident with her son on that day, stating, 'lol, I'm not mad at you, you have to learn not to get caught,'" McDonald added.

Hm, that would definitely be an interesting precedent to set. Should be an interesting case.

The day before the shooting, a teacher at the high school observed the teen searching for ammunition on his cell phone during class and she reported it to school officials, McDonald said. Jennifer Crumbely was contacted through voicemail and email about her son's web search.

Later, McDonald said, the mother texted her son: "LOL, I'm not mad at you, you have to learn not to get caught."

.....

The next day, the day of the shooting, the teen's teacher saw an alarming note on his desk, McDonald said. The note contained a drawing of a semiautomatic handgun pointing at the words: "The thoughts won't stop, help me." She said it also contained a drawing of a bullet with the words "blood everywhere" and a drawing of a person who appeared to be shot and bleeding.

Further down on the drawing, McDonald said, were the words: "My life is useless," and "The world is dead."

James and Jennifer Crumbley were summoned to the school that morning and Ethan Crumbley was brought to the office with his backpack, McDonald said. She said the drawing, by that point, had been altered. She said the parents were shown the drawing and told they had to get their son into counseling within 48 hours.

"Both James and Jennifer Crumbley failed to ask if their son had his gun with him or where his gun was located and failed to inspect his backpack for the presence of the gun, which he had with him," McDonald said.

She said the parents resisted taking their son out of school and left without him.

"He was returned to the classroom," McDonald said.

She said that once news broke that there was an active shooter at the high school, Jennifer Crumbley texted her son at 1:22 p.m.: "Ethan don't do it."

Then at 1:37 p.m., McDonald said, James Crumbley called 911 reporting that a gun was missing from his house and he believed his son may be the shooter. McDonald said the gun had been stored unlocked in a drawer in their bedroom.

Guaranteed they are blaming Biden and think they shouldn't be charged (based on their past public love fest for Trump).

Have the cops checked with Brian Laundrie's folks?

Apparently they can find things quicker than the cops.

Good Lord people....yeah I'm all for charging the parents.

"Learn to not get caught?"

Who are these monsters?

Not to mention idiots. How many mass shooters have there been who go into a school armed to the teeth and then everything turns out okay and they go on to live happily ever after?

I'm betting its a small list.

man reading about the events leading up to this is infuriating. It must be agonizing for the families of the victims to see how preventable this was.

I guess we'll see.................

However, the Crumbleys' attorneys, Smith and Mariell Lehman, said that despite reports, the couple is not on the run and will be returning to the area to be arraigned.

"The Crumbleys left town on the night of the tragic shooting for their own safety," they said in a message to the Free Press:

"On Thursday night we contacted the Oakland County prosecutor to discuss this matter and to advise her that James and Jennifer Crumbley would be turning themselves in to be arraigned. Instead of communicating with us, the prosecutor held a press conference to announce charges.

"The Crumbleys left town on the night of the tragic shooting for their own safety. They are returning to the area to be arraigned. They are not fleeing from law enforcement despite recent comments in media reports."

Yikes. This isn't even a bad, "Kid stole my gun." It was straight up negligent gifting him a gun, not getting him psychological help when it seemed obvious he needed it and overall different levels of just trying to bury the issue/concerns vs address it head on when it was brought to their attention. Almost half a dozen major red flags in the few days leading up to the shooting? That's a scary level of negligence.

I can see why they're being charged. I don't think any other shooter has been remotely close in having the parents have knowledge of issues and refuse to address them.

The learn not to get caught appears to be about googling ammo during school and not the shooting.
