I don't think it is fair to characterize the new arena design as a "fad design." Both the UBS Center and the Calgary Event Centre were designed to compliment the surrounding infrastructure and architecture—UBS at Belmont Park, and the new arena in the East Village. If you transplanted both arenas to the other's location they would look completely out of place.

I think you have to consider it's location too, being next to Belmont Park, which is a horse racing institution. Building something modern and trendy would look so wrong.

I think that one does it. Hopefully they got the bathroom situation at the UBS Arena sorted out to accommodate.

It should, at least for women-

UBS Arena will also have "the largest number of women's restrooms among all NHL venues," according to the team, which is no doubt fantastic news for those who have ever gotten in that line during intermission.

This condition is endemic in Edmonton.

They spelt USB wrong.

The Islanders will never get it in the hole correctly the first time.

I should add that I hate modern architecture for the most part lol. Everything looks dated after a few years. Give me any city’s downtown with a historic district. Timeless.

The thing is, it doesn't even do the romanesque revival(ish) thing very well. If you look at the American Airlines Centre (for example), it adds some interest through the roof line, and varied facade. UBS is just a monumental brick cuboid with faux copper flourishes.

No, but it does the look-like-the-other-buildings-surrounding-it-at-Belmont thing quite well, which was the intention.
