Drove Invy to Calgary yesterday and left around 10 am, didnt get into town until midnight. No gas, food or cell service was a huge bummer. They really should try to add at least some cell range as not having cell coverage for such a large stretch of highway is pretty dangerous.

We saw at least 6 jack knifed semi's on various hills. I also have never seen so many semi's in my life, probably about 2,000 all parked on the side of the road just sleeping it out.

93 not having cell service is absurd. Fix it. It’s a safety concern.

I got caught in a total whiteout on there, at night. Had to just keep going because pulling over would have meant death... and it was -30. I was mostly driving by looking out my passenger window and following the guardrail. Scariest drive of my life.

It's raining like crazy in Van, but it often does. Felt worse than most falls but didn't realize it was this severe.

It was known all year this was going to be a double dip la Nina year and this is traditionally what happens. Higher than usual storm rates.

Having said that, this atmospheric river is a new thing I haven't seen the likes of around here. It doesn't stop. Doesn't let up.

Vancouvers locked in now with all highways closed.

On the island, I'm guessing anything north of Langford is a no go.
Shawnigan Lake is cut off. Sooke is completely cut off. Trans Canada was closed at Mackenzie interchange late last night, I expect it's still not in good shape. We're slated for 90km/h winds soon now, and with the ground soggy it's probably going to down a lot of trees.

Is the Pacific Marine loop down now too? Hell id assume so. Between China Beach and Sombrio might actually slide, that stretch is hanging on barely already.

Sooke being blocked is a shocker.

It is raining pretty good around these parts. I live on a hill in a forest and the the leaves have clogged a lot of the drains so a lot of people were out this morning trying to free the drains for debris. Some small roads the water was knee deep from not draining.

The mudslides out in the interior are a major problem. Hopefully they start getting to people soon. Estimated 200-300 cars stuck between the two slides between Hope and Merritt.

Yeah, just got an email from work saying to stand down until further notice. My job is to respond to emergencies, so unfortunately that means having to face these kinds of risks, however if there is literally no way through, not much you can do.

From what I've heard it's likely, but no one is daring to go check. That hairpin turn at Jordan River, and then just beyond Chin Beach are probably in BAD shape.

Some of the areas that washed out on the coq were pipelining segments for TMX. You can see the access ramps from the videos. Wonder if they underestimated the amount of erosion control required or if the slides happened above them.

Sounds like a really dire situation across the SW portion of BC. Crazy stuff. It feels like this is potentially the worst natural disaster within Canada over the course of my lifetime.

From what my sister says the lower parts of Merritt are being evacuated.

Brother in law made it to work at the mine but apparently they've stood them down & coordinated with emergency services and sent almost all personnel out to help with laying sandbags. We've never been to their new place so we weren't entirely sure where they're placed, but it sounds like they're not quite in Princeton, so they're out of the flood zone. Glad the mine decided to send the crews out to help out.

For about the last 10 minutes, the rain was so heavy I opened the door to look and there was zero visibility. Seems to have slowed down to a normal level now.

I know some people who work with EMBC and due to the soil conditions from the fires and abnormally hot/dry summer, they were expecting landslides and flooding to be an issue this fall.

Aren't you now also supposed to see some really high winds, or has that occurred already?

I wonder what the impact of this storm and highway closures will be on stores, in particular grocery stores, in Western Canada? Will we begin to see shortages by the end of this week if the roads stay closed for two or three days?

Yeah, pretty windy where I am. My sister is in Poco and lost power for about an hour, but it's back on now. Not as bad as it was a couple of weeks ago though, at least not where I am.
