More like Seattle swooped in with bro dibs because he liked her before you so you abide by the code send her off reluctantly but secretly she's still pining to be back with you and all her things are still in your nightstand and bathroom.

Then Zadorov replaces Hanifin. Really no difference.

I kinda thought he would have been a trade deadline move to a contender for a cup run and then re-sign with the Flames in the off season. Seems pretty unlikely that Seattle would deal their first ever captain after less than a season though.
I guess it was unusual for them to have a pyrrhic victory with their expansion draft trade demands though too so maybe there is still hope.

It looks like Atlanta traded their first captain (Buchberger) at the trade deadline in their first season, so it's not unheard of.

Should have shopped him at the deadline. That means you lose a different guy, but would rather recoup a high pick and then lose whoever than lose Gio for nothing.

He had a MNTC, which would have hindered things and I’m not sure what team (a) needed him and (b) could afford the space. The most expensive D that got moved as a rental was Savard and he was a lot cheaper and not a 1C.

I hope he has some gas left in the tank as Seattle could be an enjoyable place to end his career.

And C, wouldn’t have lost him (or a young player they wanted to keep) in the expansion draft anyway! Moving him wasn’t an option, at all.

Rangers had interest in gio:
https://nypost.com/2021/07/21/kraken...iordano-twist/
Nyr looking to trade Defenseman they protected in expansion draft (a slot which could have been used to protect Gio)
https://nypost.com/2021/10/11/ranger...oster-for-now/
How a deal couldn’t have been done prior to expansion draft after it was abundantly clear that Seattle wouldn’t budge off their asking price to not select Gio is beyond me. Letting the captain go for nothing, especially when there was a team interested, apparently with a protection slot available, is beyond comprehension.

Hyperbole much? Gio is 38. Yes he is a physical specimen, but age will catch up and it's likely going to be this year.
Why make deals to protect a player who is likely about to hit a very steep decline?

I’m not suggesting that they make a deal to protect him. Point being there was probably a framework for a trade to get assets for him instead of losing him for zip. Nyr had interest, they protected a d they are now looking to move on from, hard to imagine there wasn’t a deal to be made.

The Flanes would have then had to expose the D New York traded to them.

With them absorbing his full cap? Unlikely.
