To me the only hesitation to paying Gaudreau what he wants, is his performance in the playoffs.

He's a proven producer and the straw that stirs the drink for the Flames, but he has been completely unable to elevate his game in the playoffs.

Is that on the player? Or the Team? I'm honestly not sure.

So the question is how much of an overpay do you build in for Calgary, and how much of a discount do you ask for because Gaudreau is a lot weaker defensively than most of the top paid wingers? There’s also the PO factor. Gaudreau has had a lot more trouble in the tighter checking POs than Rantanen and obviously Kucherov.
Also Last 3 seasons

Panarin 1.26 pt/g

Gaudreau .99 pt/g

Gaudreau is a wizard but Panarin has been the best Winger in the game the last 3 seasons IMO. Cant really use Panarin as a comparable even if it wasnt a stupid contract.

8x8.5 for Johnny. get'r done.

Man I wish we snagged Panarin back when he was just breaking on to the scene in Chicago.

He has only translated his play and elevated on new teams too. The true test of an elite talent.

This is a major consideration. I don't see Gaudreau as being the go-to guy on a Cup winning team. I think if he was surrounded by better players it would be a non issue, but when he is the go to guy it's easy to shut him down. Adding someone like Eichel could definitely help change that.
