I guess do you still value him as a top 4 pick
It’s not this year, he is going to be overpaid for a few yrs unless he makes the giant leap now

Mmm. Yes. This is the kind of thing I want more of. Pettiness. But not just pettiness. Shrewd, measured pettiness.
Yesssssss.

This is funny but it’s a lose / lose situation for both teams. Why would Carolina want this kid at that price? Montreal either gets a late first or a crap contract.

I get that the canes pick won’t be great but there is a lottery and they did lose Hamilton. East is tough and if they miss the playoffs you never know. Kotkaniemi is worth a late first but a grossly overpaid kotkaniemi isn’t worth a first IMO let alone first and a 3rd

Could be some hard feelings, he is not the same type of player as Aho.
With a $6m price tag, crap load of pressure in Montreal

It’s a business. He likely doesn’t (and shouldn’t) give a #### about feelings.

Which seems logical, but letting players go in this fashion could chum the water for more.
It's a bit part of why teams will announce their plan to match no matter what ahead of time.

I guess, however when the media is all over him, that could be interesting
Montreal is a different place than Carolina.

Montreal can't afford to keep him (over cap) and can't afford to let him go (lack of depth at center).
If Montreal matches they eat up 1/2 of their 12+ million cap space next off-season with only 13 players signed. Yikes!
If you're speaking revenge factor...well played Carolina!

Montreal are already over the cap without matching this deal.
I think we've learned that teams would rather trade for more LTIR cap hits than trade away pieces, but I wonder if there's any players worth vulturing off the Habs

Let the cycle of Pettiness continue!
Next year Habs offer sheet Necas.
Canes retaliate and offer sheet Suzuki.
Then Canes offer sheet Caulfield
Habs kidnap Seth Jarvis and brainwash him to believe his new identity is Alexandre Chapdelaine from Trois-Rivieres and sign a deal with the Habs.
Canes petition re-elected President Trump to nuke Montreal.
and so on

Anyone that faults the kid and tries to spout loyalty is a putz. Teams chew players up and spit them out all the time. He just got a big pay day, way ahead of schedule in a system that keeps him at or above that pay level for at least 4 more years unless the team walks away. And if they do walk away, he gets to pick where he plays, even if it is for less.

Exactly this.
Carolina knew they were going to be lighting the Habs Cap Structure on fire and then decided to add a little more gas.
The $20 signing bonus....I'm still chuckling.

Not this year. Necas will be next year.

I don’t see him as a $6M player yet. I believe the new CBA would require a QO of $7.32M(120%) next season, which is a lot of dough, and probably why he signed it.

why sign a 1 year deal like that?
Its clearly done as a counter to the Aho offer sheet.
Yikes, that's like throwing egg on the face of his current team.

Could be that he doesn’t want to stay in Montreal? The dude signed a contract that had a $20 signing bonus to be part of a publicity stunt. I’d say it’s not crazy to speculate that perhaps he isn’t wild about being a Hab.
The Habs suck. No Weber, and there will be no Cinderella run this year. They should probably just let him go and take the first in a very strong draft. Carolina also isn’t that strong of a team.
…of course they’ll probably match, and the media/fans will turn on the player and they’ll eventually trade him anyways.
