Wow, still a shocker. I read recently that he wasn't doing so good and someone, his friend, was going to fill in for him for some upcoming shows.
Playing till the end too. RIP Charlie.

Very sad. He was the musical glue that kept the Stones together, and his jazz background gave them their signature sound. He was the least hard living of any of them, but simply being the oldest Stone caught up with him.

I am happy I got to see them live many years ago at Commonwealth.
When the Beatles v Stone discussion come up I am always a Stones guy.

Such a great drummer. I always liked his calm demeanour.. Jagger once said the Stones would only continue if he, Richards and Watts were all in the band. Interesting to see what they will decide to do.

I read a book as a teenager called "According to The Rolling Stones" and it was a collection of stories written by all 4 of the current members. One story had Jagger bothering Watts so much that at one point Watts had him by the throat and was cocked and loaded to punch him out (he didnt). Jagger noted "You never want to be on the wrong end of a drummer's right hand."
Rest in peace Mr Watts.

Chatlie was the glue that held the Stones together.. Somehow if I was a betting man, even with age, I wouldn't have picked him as first to go in that band.

He got the loudest cheer when I saw them in Edmonton in the 90's. Almost 60 years in the same band. Phenomenal.

Cool post from the Hip.
Quote:
This shot was taken in Belgium in 1995. We had opened 4 European shows for The Stones that summer. After we had finished our set at the first show we walked backstage and right past Charlie who gave us a nod and his signature half smile. We were so excited that he nodded and looked toward us.
The following day Charlie sought us out to apologize for ‘being so rude’ to us. He explained that he thought we were German crew and as his German wasn’t good, he had said nothing. He later realized we were the opening band, and he made a point of telling us that he had heard our set and had enjoyed it but had not seen us so didn’t recognize us. We were speechless.
Charlie Watts was the consummate gentleman and a huge inspiration to all of us in The Hip.
Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and band mates.

Making love and breaking hearts
It is a game for youth
But I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
I loved his crisp drumming on their disco flavoured songs like Miss You and Emotional Rescue.
